1. Evaluate the following limits

𝑥
(a) 𝑙𝑖𝑚 [3]
𝑥→−∞ √𝑥 2 − 9
(b) 𝑙𝑖𝑚 √𝑥(√𝑥 − √𝑥 − 1) [4]
𝑥→∞

2. A particle moves in a straight line. The distance of the particle, s cm the origin at t
seconds is given by 𝑠 = 6𝑡 2 − 𝑡 3 . Find
(a) the velocity of the particle after 2 seconds. [2]
(b) the acceleration of the particle after 2 seconds. [2]
(c) the maximum distance of the particle. [4]

3. 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 28
(a) Express in partial fractions. [2]

𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 28 𝜋
∫ 𝑑𝑥 = − 2 ln 2
0 (1 − 𝑥)(𝑥 2 + 9) 12

4. 𝑑𝑦
Find the general solution of the differential equation (1 + 𝑥 2 ) 𝑑𝑥 − 2𝑥𝑦 = 𝑥,
expressing y in terms of x. Hence, sketch the particular solution curve which passes
through the origin. [8]

5. 1

𝑦 = 8 − 2𝑥 and the curve 𝑦 = 8 − 𝑥 3 . Hence, sketch, on the same diagram, the line
𝑦 = 8 − 2𝑥 and the curve 𝑦 = 8 − 𝑥 3 . [5]

formed, correct to 2 decimal places. [5]

8. 𝑑𝑦

(b) In a fragmentation process, the rate of disintegration of a substance at any time t

varies proportionately to the amount of a substance y and also to the amount of
1
active yeast x. If the constant of proportion is 2, the value of x at any t is
