I love the sockmadness Yarn and Material

knitting competition,
which is run on the
social media platform
Ravelry each year,
starting in March – you
are encouraged to knit
socks with speed and
accuracy. But I never
thought of designing a
pattern myself until one
of my fellow test knitter
and friend, Engelkristall
(which is German for
Crystal of Angel) told
me that she thinks I can
do so.
You will need about 250 m (275 yards) of MC and 180 m (200 yards) of CC
in high contrasting colors. The sample shown is a size L knitted in Tosh Twist
Light by Madelinetosh (384 m/420 yards per 100g), colorways Malmö (green,
CC) and Silver Fox (light grey, MC).
You will also need knitting needles in 2.5 mm (US 1.5), suitable for small
circumferences. I used DPNs, but you can also knit with other needles. Please
note, the heel flap is worked best with DPNs or a spare circular needle.
Other notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors and a cable needle
(optional).
Gauge
28 stitches and 52 rows for 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4“) in sole pattern

You can use any method to work the cables in this pattern (have your cable st(s) – stitch(es)
needle at hand) but I recommend cabling without a cable needle. Refer to the tbl – through the back loop
linked video tutorial. MC – main color
CC – contrast color
sm – stitch marker
At the end of this pattern, you will find charts. There are charts for sizes M
and L and also for darker and lighter MC so be careful to pick the right one Cuff
for your socks! With MC, cast on 66 [70] sts with the German Twisted Cast On (refer to linked
video tutorial). Join for working in the round, be careful not to twist.
Lefty knitters: Please feel free to mirror chart A (read it from left to right) to
get no troubles with working the heel! Chart B is centered and may be read Start working row 1 of chart A. The chart is worked twice in total per round.

Work the cuff round for a total of 15 times (or until desired length) by
sts in brackets [ ] are meant to be worked in size L only. repeating row 1 of the chart.
sts in asterisks * * are repeated as written.
Next round: Work row 2 of chart A (66 [70] sts).

German Twisted Cast On (Old Norwegian Cast On) Join CC and work the leg according to the chart, starting in round 3 of chart

Heel flap is worked flat with both colors over the next 32 stitches. Now, with both yarns arranged for working stranded colorwork, pick up and
k16 [18] stitches from the edge of heel flap, then pick up and k another st out
Row 1: With CC, k32 sts, do not turn of the gap between instep and sole stitches, alternating sts in MC and CC,
Row 2: Slide the 32 sts you just worked from right to left and start at the right beginning with MC

Size L (only work this round for the first time): With CC, p2tog, follow
