A SWIMMING ATHLETE
“YESSY V. YOSAPUTRA”

Yessy Venisia Yosaputra was born on 27 August 1994 to Yohanes Yosaputra and
Sumarni. Yessy began her hobby of swimming when she was five years old. At that time
he used to sing Brother Yang's swimming therapy for medicine. His parents listed Yessy
as one of the leading swimming clubs in Bandung, Aquarius Swimming Club. Yessy won
3rd place in the 2001 Horizon Cup championship. At that time he competed in the 100-
meter freestyle. Yessy is known to be one of the most skilled in training and always
follows in connection with an even though he is not always the first champion, but he is
still a trained athlete. As she began to learn backstroke and butterfly style, exactly 13
years old Yessy began to like backstroke numbers.
In 2007, Yessy won the first 100-meter backstroke of the age group IV at the
National Swimming Championships. The following year, he participated in the 2008
PON in East Kalimantan, when he was quite successful by winning the silver medal in
the 200 metre backstroke. Thanks to his achievements, Yessy was called up to participate
in the national swimming training and prepared for the 2009 SEA Games in Laos. But
unfortunately, he did not leave because of illness. To treat her disappointment, Yessy
began to train hard. In a day it can be 3-7 hours of practice plus two more physical
exercises a week. Yessy's hard training was finally not in vain, he won the silver medal at
the 2010 Asian Beach Games in Oman and won the gold medal at the 2011 SEA Games
backstroke, including breaking the record at the time.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Yessy caught the attention of the Indonesian public.
Unfortunately, he finished with a time record of 2.20.88 seconds and was 28th, thus
failing to advance to the next round in the 200-meter backstroke. Even so, Yessy remains
Indonesia's top swimmer. At the 2017 SEA Games, Yessy managed to present a silver
medal in the 200-meter backstroke with a time record of 2 minutes 18.19 seconds, only a
few seconds away from the Vietnamese swimmer who received the gold medal. His
participation in international events became an important capital for Yessy. She also
remains the mainstay female swimmer in tournaments and other championships for
Indonesia.

Silver Medal at the 2017 SEA Games

As of 2017, Yessy has participated in the SEA Games four times since 2011. In the
dwi event, he won 6 medals, namely 1 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. According to him,
qualifying to be part of the Indonesian team in this year's SEA Games is more difficult
than previous years. Indonesia usually sends up to 25 swimmers in the event. This year's
selection is tightened. "This year Indonesia only sends 20 people (swim athletes)," he
said. From the beginning, Yessy said, he followed the entire selection series until he
succeeded in becoming one of Indonesia's representatives in the swimming sports branch.
This year's SEA Games training preparations took place since 2016 located in Bali.
Yessy said he and the entire team were training from Monday to Saturday. Schedule
training in a day twice, at six in the morning and two in the afternoon. "It can be two to
two and a half hours or more or less. So, that week, it can swim about 10 times", he
explained. In addition, he added, there are also physical exercises such as fitness that are
done twice a week. Not only physical preparation, but Jessy was also required to manage
her lifestyle such as meals, sleep, and rest. For him, he understood enough how to
manage his diet, what foods he could eat and which were not recommended and should
be restricted. Including sleeping hours. Usually at 10 p.m., Yessy has gone to bed.
The sense of depression before and during the race was common for athletes, no
exception to Yessy. "(At the time of the race), eventually we focus on swimming. In fact,
the one who made it before the match", he said, idolizing Missy Franklin, an American-
Canadian swimmer. "Kalo at the SEA Games (this year), my target is to win a silver
medal," he explained enthusiastically. He felt grateful that the target could finally be
achieved.

Between College and Practice

Dividing college and training time to prepare for the swimming championships was
a tough thing for Yasi. "That's honestly tough. Between going to college, just going to
bed," he said. For example, the SEA Games event, which he thinks is a big event. "SEA
Games is a big event. So it needs to be really focused," he said.
Currently, it can be said to be a temporary break time for Yessy in relation to the
preparation for the swimming race. He revealed that his busyness now is to complete his
college obligations, by continuing to practice (slow) regularly during college. In her spare
time, Yessy usually spends at home reading books or hanging out with her friends.

Keep Achieving Goals

Her interest in swimming was also inspired by her older sister who was also a
swimmer. The woman who was born in Bandung, 23 years ago, revealed that being a
swimmer like now has never been thought of before. "Honestly, I didn't expect to be an
athlete (swimmer), especially if I had achievements. Winning at the SEA Games,
continuing to participate in the Olympics," he said. He frequently participated in inter-
school swimming, which made him more motivated to continue working and performing.
As a child, Yessy revealed she wanted to be a teacher. "Have thought about whether
I'm after I'm done (being a swimmer), so just coach swimming", he said laughing. Yessy
hopes that next year he can become one of Indonesia's representatives at the 2018
ASEAN Games. He revealed that if he managed to become part of the Indonesian athlete
team for the event, his dream could be realized. "From the SEA Games, the Olympics are
over, then the ASEAN Games are over," he hoped.
He believed the journey to success was a long process to be enjoyed. "Even if we
fail, we have to keep trying. Because in the end if we try, we will be successful long time
ago", he answered when asked about the motto of life. Yessy invites friends who are
reaching for goals to keep focusing on goals. Eventually, that success will be enjoyed.
"Never give up!" he concluded eagerly.
