Lesson 1
Characteristics of Vertebrates

MELC: Determine the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates

(S6MT-IIe-f-3)
Objectives: 1. Identify the kinds of vertebrates
2. Describe the characteristics of each kind of vertebrates
3. Determine the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates

Let’s Explore and Discover

Let’s have a Gallery Walk to travel around famous places in Puerto Princesa.
There are different groups of vertebrates found there.
Look at the pictures and study the distinguishing characteristics of each
group.

Characteristics
“Amphibians” means double
lives, this means that they can
live both on land and in water.
They are also cold- blooded
and most have slimy scales for
body covering. Most
amphibians crawl or hop. This
may include toads and

amphibians lay their eggs and

Frogs breathe through their

adulthood.

Let’s Practice

ACTIVITY 1

Read the adventures of some Grade 6 pupils about their experiences when
they visited famous places around Puerto Princesa City.

During their Science class, the grade six pupils were asked to share something
about the animals they saw from famous sites in the city. Georgia talked about
Baker’s Hill. “The landscape is so beautiful, the hopia is too delicious, and I love the
Palawan peacock pheasant (tandikan) who looks so lovely when their tails are wide
open!” she said excitedly.
Bryan was next to talk about their visit to Yamang Bukid.
“The animals I saw there are birds, fishes in a little pond, and
carabaos being milked,” he said, “We also visited the Crocodile
farm. There were lots of crocodiles, both newly hatched and a
very large one. I also saw different kinds of snakes, the famous
Palawan bearcat (binturong or musang), the Palawan pangolin
(balintong), and birds like the talking Mynah(Kiyaw) which are
being conserved and protected.”

Meanwhile, a transferee from Bgy. Cabayugan, raised his hand, politely stood
up, and said, “I have never visited those famous sites yet but we have Saint Paul
Subterranean River, locally known as Underground River where there are also
monkeys, monitor lizard (bayawak), skunk (pantot), fish, and many others. I also
know a lot of animals from home too. We keep dogs and cats inside the house. We
also have cows, carabaos, goats, chickens, and ducks. I usually see frogs and toads
around the farm and even squirrels lurking around coconut trees,” he cheerfully
narrated.
Everyone clapped their hands in awe. Then the teacher started the discussion
for the day. “All of the animals you have mentioned are called vertebrates. They have
what we call a backbone which is the main support of the movements they make
and they have certain classifications. “Everybody listened as the teacher discussed
the topic for that day and was very happy to learn something new about animals.

Directions: Identify the vertebrates from the story. Put a check on the blanks before
the number if the vertebrate was mentioned in the story and X if not.

Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct description of the distinguishing
characteristics or identify the classification of the animal in the first column.

ACTIVITY 2

Directions: Match the description in Column A by identifying the vertebrate

classification in Column B. Write the letter of your answer on the space provided
before each number.

____1. This animal’s body is mostly covered with
A. amphibian
moist and slimy skin.
____2. It feeds its young with milk and born alive
B. bird
____3. This type of vertebrate is cold-blooded and
covered in scales; has gills for breathing.
____4. These vertebrates are usually lightweight C. mammal
which allows them to fly and
covered in feathers. D. fish
____5. They are covered in dry scales or shells, they
are also cold-blooded such as turtles.
E. reptile

Let’s Sum It Up
Directions: Fill in the blank with the correct word to complete the paragraph.
Choose the word from the box below.

amphibians birds fishes reptiles mammals vertebrates

Animals with backbones are called ___________. This type has five
classifications. First are _____________, the offsprings are mostly born alive and they
feed the milk of the mother. Next are the _______________ they can both live on land
and in water. Another are the _____________, they live on the water and have gills
for breathing and fins for moving. One more are the _____________, they can also live
on land and in water for long periods and they are mostly covered with hard scales
or shells. Lastly are the ___________, some fly high and some are too heavy to fly.
Usually, they are covered with feathers. These are the animals that have backbones
that support their body and their movement.

Congratulations! You’ve done very well in this lesson!
