References and student learning resources: Lecture diarrhea ICC2-[086] ,Macleod’s clinical
book.
Student’s requirements at home:. arrange power point on how to approach a case of diarrhea
Aims and objectives: To provide the medical student with a general understanding of
• How to approach a case with diarrhea
• To be able to identify the most common and most serious causes of diarrhea
• How to focus on the history especially the alarming symptoms to determine the patient’s
plan of management .
Intended learning Outcomes: list of ILOS for the planned session
By the end of this session, students should be able to:
• To be able to differentiate between acute and chronic diarrhea
• Know the indication for antibiotics in treatment of diarrhea.
• Differentiation between different types of diarrhea.
• How to manage a case of diarrhea
Session layout and description:
• Introduction: The tutor elaborates the flow of the session and clarifies ILOS of session.

• Tasks :
Task 1 (20 mins) : Approach to a case of diarrhea

Tutor will ask students to give their presentation on how to approach a case of diarrhea
Task 2 (10mins) : Feedback on presentation

-Tutor in 10 minutes will give feedback on the presentation and give his valuable comments.

Task 3 (30 mins) : Commentary

-The tutuor will show the students 2 commentary cases

Case 1:
A 38 years old male presented with 9 months history of intermittent diarrhea associated with
mild cramping . the stools are large in volume non bloody and looks greasy. he lost 10 kgs
without trying, he mentioned that he had good appetite.
He tried refraining from dairy products with no improvement.
He has no constitutional symptoms , doesn t smoke or drink alcohol .
o/e he has glossitis but no oral lesions , he has pallor.

Case 2:
A 50 years old female presented with diarrhea of 10 days duration.the stool was watery greenish
in colour with offensive smell.
She travelled to Kenya 12 days ago , but before travelling she had urinary tract infection for
which she took co amoxiclav
She is known diabetic on insulin
No weight loss
On each case please answer the following:
