Quarter 1 Unit/Topic: Unit 2/Lesson 8– How does my body work?

–assessment

Standard: SC.912.L.14:26: Explain the basic functions of the human immune system, including specific and
nonspecific immune response, vaccines, and antibiotics.
SC.912.L.14:27* Honors: Identify the functions of the major parts of the brain, including the meninges, medulla, pons,
midbrain, hypothalamus, thalamus, cerebellum and cerebrum.
SC.912.L.14:36: Describe the factors affecting blood flow through the cardiovascular system.
SC.912.L.16:13: Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the human reproductive system. Describe the process of
human development from fertilization to birth and major changes that occur in each trimester of pregnancy.

 Objective: SWBAT identify the major parts of the brain on diagrams or models.

SWBAT identify the functions of the major parts of the brain, including the meninges, medulla, pons, midbrain,
hypothalamus, thalamus, cerebellum and cerebrum. (Honors Only Standard)
SWBAT describe the factors affecting blood flow through the cardiovascular system.
SWBAT describe the basic anatomy of the human reproductive system.
SWBAT describe the process of human development from fertilization to birth and major changes that occur in
each trimester of pregnancy.
Instructional Event 1: Bellwork

● Time: 5 min

● Teacher: Greet students at door, routines/procedures – attendance, pass out work, etc…, monitor discussions,
and facilitate responses in whole group.

Student: Answer the bellwork.

The rate at which blood flows through the human body changes in response to many factors. Which statement
describes one of these factors and its effect on blood flow?
A. A high viscosity of blood causes an increased resistance in the blood vessels and leads to slow blood flow.
B. A low blood pH decreases the rate of diffusion through the blood vessels and leads to slow blood flow.
C. The changing of the shape of red blood cells to a crescent shape decreases resistance and lead to a faster blood
flow.
D. The narrowing of blood vessels increases pressure and leads to a faster blood flow.

Correct answer: A. A high viscosity of blood causes an increased resistance in the blood vessels and leads to slow blood
flow. Viscosity refers to the thickness of blood. This thickness is caused by the number of red blood cells. Thick blood
travels through blood vessels at a slower rate than thin blood.

Instructional Event 2: Nature of Science and Lab Safety

● Time: 30 min.

● Teacher: Distribute the Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Assessment. Students will complete the assessment.

● Materials: Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 assessment

Student: Students will complete the Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2.

● Resource: Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 lessons

● Opportunities for Differentiation: students may work individually, collaboratively as a group, or whole class.

● Assessment: Assess that student correctly completed their Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Assessment.
Instructional Event 3: Wrap up and Debrief

● Time: 5-10 min (time permitting)

● Teacher: Bring the students back together as a whole class to debrief critical content for this day.

● Student: Students will discuss the assessment questions as a group and come to a consensus for the correct
answer.

● Resource: Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Assessment

● Assessment: : Students will record their answers on the Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Assessment student
document.
