Quarter 1 Unit/Topic: Unit 2/Lesson 3– How does my body work?

– Blood Flow

Standard: SC.912.L.14.36: Describe the factors affecting blood flow through the cardiovascular system.

 Objective: SWBAT recall the function of the cardiovascular system.

 Connect specific factors to an increase or decrease in blood flow.
Instructional Event 1: Bellwork

● Time: 5 min

● Teacher: Greet students at door, routines/procedures – attendance, pass out work, etc…, monitor discussions,
and facilitate responses in whole group.

Student: Answer the bellwork.

Which of the following factors would most directly affect blood flow through the circulatory system?
A. blood pressure

B. blood sugar

C. respiratory rate

D. outside temperature

Correct answer: A. blood pressure The factors that most directly affect blood flow are blood pressure, blood volume,
resistance and activity level.

Instructional Event 2: Blood Flow activity

● Time: 30 min.

● Teacher: Introduce the Cardiovascular System and explain that today the class will view multiple teacher-
led demonstrations, followed by a debrief, and then they will be provided some independent time for
processing. The teacher will perform each demonstration, on at a time. The demonstrations are in the
Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2 Blood Flow Demonstrations PPT. As the teacher performs the blood pressure
and blood volume demonstrations, the students will complete the Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2 Blood
Flow Student Worksheet. After each demonstration, ask the following monitoring questions:
How does each factor affect the flow of blood?
Why does a factor have a specified outcome?
Can the outcome be changed if the factor is modified, and if so, how?

● Materials: 1 squirt bottle, 1 graduated cylinder for water collection, 4 funnels (3 same size, 1 different size),
4 collection beakers, 3-250 ml beakers, 1-400 ml beaker, 3 beakers filled with liquids that vary in viscosity, 3
pipettes, Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2 Blood Flow Demonstrations PPT, Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2

● Student: Students will observe the demonstrations and complete the Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2 Blood
Flow Student Worksheet.

● Resource: Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2 Blood Flow Student Worksheet, Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2
Blood Flow Demonstrations PPT

● Opportunities for Differentiation: students may work individually, collaboratively as a group, or whole class.
● Assessment: Assess that student correctly completed the Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2 Blood Flow Student
Worksheet

Instructional Event 3: Wrap up and Debrief

● Time: 5-10 min (time permitting)

● Teacher: Review the purpose of the demonstrations and reiterate how these factors affect blood flow.
Students will answer the Exit ticket on the bottom of the Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2 Blood Flow Student
Worksheet.
