MALE TERMS WHAT IT IS / WHAT IT DOES

Penis Allows passage of urine and semen

Provides sensation (has many nerve endings)

Contributes fructose (sugar) to semen for nourishing the mature

Seminal Vesicle sperm
Combines with sperm from the epididymis

Prostate Gland Produces most of the fluid that makes up semen combines with
mature sperm and fructose (sugar) from the seminal vesicle

Provides storage for sperm

Vas Deferens Allow passage of mature sperm
Provides sensation
Carries sperm from the testes

Allows passage of urine In males allows passage of semen

Urethra In males is the tube inside the penis that transports the sperm or
urine outside the body

Epididymis Allows maturation of sperm

Receives immature sperm from the testis and stores it for several
days

Scrotum Muscular sac which is shorter when cold, longer when warm
Holds testes
Controls temperature

Testes Produces sperm and sex hormones (androgens and

testosterone)
Each is made of 500–1,200 feet of tightly coiled tubes

Cell from a man called sperm

Sperm carry the strings of genes (called chromosomes) or DNA
Gametes (Sperm) instructions in case the sperm meets with an egg cell and
fertilizes it
Contains half the amount of DNA as a normal human cell

FEMALE TERMS WHAT IT IS / WHAT IT DOES

Carries strings of genes called chromosomes which mix with

chromosomes of sperm if fertilization occurs
Gamete (Egg or Ovum) They dissolve in the Fallopian tube after about 24 hours if not
fertilized
Contains half the amount of DNA as a normal human cell

A zygote is a cell formed by a fertilization event between two

gametes. The zygote's genome is a combination of the DNA
Zygote in each gamete, and contains all of the genetic information
necessary to form a new individual. In multicellular
organisms, the zygote is the earliest developmental stage.

Provide storage for the ovum (eggs)

Ovaries Allow maturation of the ovum
Produce sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone and
androgens)

Allow passage of ovum toward uterus

Oviduct (Fallopian Tubes)

Houses and protects embryo/fetus/baby

Uterus Allows nutrient & waste exchange with placenta during
pregnancy
Nourishes an embryo before a placenta grows

The bottom section of the uterus

Cervix Produces fluids to help sperm travel
Produces a mucus plug to keep out germs during pregnancy

Allows passage of sperm

Produces fluid daily to cleanse and lubricate itself and help
Vagina sperm travel
Allows passage of shed endometrium during menstrual
period Allows passage of baby

Fetal Development Term WHAT IT IS / WHAT IT DOES

Males - Sperm
Gamete Females - Egg or Ovum
Contains half the amount of DNA as a normal human cell
A zygote is a cell formed by a fertilization event between
two gametes. The zygote's genome is a combination of
Zygote the DNA in each gamete, and contains all of the genetic
information necessary to form a new individual. In
multicellular organisms, the zygote is the earliest
developmental stage.

An unborn offspring of a mammal, in particular an unborn

Fetus human baby more than eight weeks after conception.
Prior to the 8 week mark an unborn offspring is called a
blastocyst.

The placenta is a temporary organ that connects the

developing fetus via the umbilical cord to the uterine wall
Placenta to allow nutrient uptake, temperature regulation, waste
elimination, and gas exchange via the mother's blood
supply; to fight against internal infection; and to produce
hormones which support pregnancy.

The umbilical cord is a connection between the

Umbilical Cord developing embryo or fetus and the placenta. The
umbilical cord supplies the fetus with oxygenated,
nutrient-rich blood from the placenta.

Amniotic fluid is a clear, yellow fluid which is found within

Amniotic Fluid the first 12 days following conception within the amniotic
sac. It surrounds the growing fetus in the uterus. Amniotic
fluid has many important functions and is vital for healthy
fetal development.

Amniotic Sac A sac filled with amniotic fluid, called the amniotic sac,
surrounds the fetus throughout the pregnancy. The
amniotic fluid is liquid made by the fetus and protects the
fetus from injury and helps regulate the temperature of
the fetus.
