Data Domain provides a variety of document types to support our products. End-user
documents include user guides, hardware installation guides, administrator guides,
software guides, part replacement guides, release notes, and others. Integration
documents describe how to integrate Data Domain systems with third party backup
applications, and compatibility matrices show which components are compatible with
each other.

Note
Hard copies of a document may be out of date. Always check for the current version
of a document before you start an upgrade or begin a significant configuration change.
l DD2200 system—A system from the factory with 4 TB, 7.5 TB, or a 17.2 TB
storage does not need a license.
l DD2500 system—A system from the factory with 12TB or 27 TB storage does not
need a license.
You can expand systems from seven disk drives to twelve disk drives. To expand and
enable storage capacity, you may need to add additional memory, additional disk
drives, and the necessary software licenses.
Note
Note
After the expansion from seven to twelve disks, the system includes one RAID group
of six disk drives, one RAID group of five new disk drives, and one spare disk drive that
can be used by either group.
Disk drives are located in the front of the system as shown in the photo. Left to right,
drives are numbered 0-3 on the top row, 4-7 in the middle row, and 8-11 in the bottom
row.
l Base configurations contains 7 disk drives in locations 0 through 6. The other slots
contain blank carriers.
l Expanded configurations contains 12 disk drives.

Note
l Make sure to use the correct part and the correct size drives for your system.
n DD2500 system—Use 3.0 TB HDD disk drives.
n DD2200 system—Use 2.0 TB HDD disk drives.
l Use only components that are Data Domain field replaceable units. Do not use disk
drives from other systems because disks from other systems are not compatible.
l Make sure that the system has no failed or missing disk drives before adding new
disk drives. See Verify the disk drive status before the upgrade on page 5.
The front of the system contains LED indicators to display the disk drive status,
shown in the red circle in the photo.
l The triangle-shaped LED pointing to the right indicates the status of the disk to
the right of the LED.
l The triangle pointing to the left indicates the status of the disk to the left of the
LED.
l A blue-colored LED indicates a running functional status while amber indicates
failed.
Memory requirements
l DD2200 system—The base configuration of 2 x 4-GB DIMM is sufficient to
upgrade from 4 TB to 7.5 TB.
Note
If you are also upgrading the DD2200 from 2 to 4 DIMM, see the Data Domain
DD2200 and DD2500 Systems DIMM Replacement and Upgrade Guide.
l DD2500 system—The base configuration of 4 x 8-GB DIMM is sufficient to
upgrade from 12 TB to 21 TB.
Memory verification for a DD2200 system
1. Enter the enclosure show memory command to verify the installed memory
for your DD2200 system:
# enclosure show memory
This command may take up to a minute to complete. Please wait...
Enclosure 1
Number of DIMMS : 4
2. Compare the Memory Size displayed on your DD2200 system with the display
provided in Step 1.
3. If the memory is 16,384 MiB, you have completed the memory verification.
However, if the total memory displayed on your DD2200 system is less than 16,384
MiB, you must stop the disk expansion procedure. Your system needs a memory
upgrade.
4. Get the memory upgrade kit and follow the Field Replacement Unit (FRU)
document instructions for that kit. They can be found in the SolVe Desktop Data
Domain Procedure Generator or the Online Support site at https://
support.emc.com.
Note
The DD2200 model base configuration of 7 disks is sufficient to upgrade from 4TB to
7.5 TB.
Note
The physical locations of the drives are labeled 0-11. The corresponding logical
output for the drives is 1-12.
3. Look for failed drives by running the disk show state command:

Note
For systems running DD OS 6.0 or higher, consult the release notes related to your
operating system on support.emc.com for the Electronic Licensing Management
System (ELMS) procedure.
Procedure
1. The license may be pre-installed. To check for a license on your system, enter
the license show command. If you need to install a license, continue with the
following steps.
2. Add the CONTROLLER-COD license or the EXPANDED-STORAGE license,
based on your license purchase:
a. As an administrative user, enter the following command:
Note
l The license key information is provided in the License Key Sheet that
accompanies the order. It may also be provided by email.
l If you do not have the required license key information, contact your
sales representative.
CAUTION
Note
The flashing arrows (the diamond-shaped indicator lights) on the front panel point to
and identify the specific bay.
Procedure
1. Remove a blank carrier from its bay.
2. With the new disk drive carrier handle in the open position, carefully slide the
disk drive carrier all the way into the disk drive bay until it stops.
Note
If you must reposition the newly inserted drive, press the orange button and pull
the release latch to remove the disk.
3. Push the unit fully into the drive bay until it clicks into place.
4. Close the release latch.
Note
If the drive requires excessive force to install, remove the disk drive from the
bay and repeat the installation. Never force-fit the drive into the chassis.

6. Check that the disks are in RAID groups by entering the storage show all

7. Check that the expected capacity has been added to the filesystem by entering
the filesys show space command . The post-comp Size Gib and
Avail GiB quantities should have increased from prior to the installation of
the new disk drives.

Troubleshooting
If disks are not recognized or do not show the proper state, it may be necessary to
manually unfail those disks.
Procedure
1. If disks are shown to be in a state other than spare, you will have to manually
unfail each disk:
The 'disk unfail' command will add the disk to the active
storage tier and mark it as a spare. Any exising data on this
disk will be lost.
CAUTION
Running the disk fail or disk unfail commands on the wrong disk(s)
can cause data to be lost.
2. Add these disks to the active storage tier as described in Verify the new disk
drives on page 9.
3. Enter the disk show state command to check that all disk drives are
recognized.
4. If problems persist, contact Data Domain Technical Support.
