CINEMATOGRAPHY

A significant shot in the final sequence is the use of close-up/ extreme close-up
shots between Shaun and his mum during their conversation as well as the close-up
shots of the picture of Shaun’s dad.

The closeness of the shots presents a familial closeness and familiarity between the
characters. These close-up shots are also not hand held which provides a stable, less
unsettling tone to previous hand-held close-up shots between Combo and Shaun.

A significant shot in the final sequence is the shot of Shaun walking on the beach
with the England flag. It’s a long shot at a high angle.

This shot has been used because the high angle makes Shaun look much smaller and
therefore, more vulnerable. The vulnerability of his character in the shot re-
establishes the fact that he is just a kid. The wide, longer shots at the end of the film
reveal a very empty beach and emphasises that he’s alone again. This suggests a
possible cyclical structure as he started the film lonely, then returns to being
isolated at the end of the film, but this time having been through many traumatic
and difficult experiences.

Acting inc. facial expression, body

Props (that a character interacts
with)
Setting (including colour, décor)

A significant use of mise-en-scene in the final sequence is the use of body codes
during the sequence where Shaun talks with his mum.

This is because they make eye contact, they’re facing each other, the mum moves
towards him, sits on his bed and puts his legs on her lap, making them physically
closer to each other to emphasise the closeness in their relationship. The mum’s
body language connotes a comforting tone and relaxes not just Shaun, but also the
audience from the previous violence in physical contact we’ve just witnessed.

A significant use of mise-en-scene in the final sequence is Shaun throwing away the
England flag.
This is because it symbolises Shaun’s outward rejection of Combo’s ideologies he’s
been forced to believe and it creates closure for Shaun’s character and a
transformation from being under threat of Combo to becoming his own person.
Diegetic and non-diegetic
sound.

A significant use of sound in the final sequence is the diegetic sound effect of
children playing outside during the conversation between Shaun and his mum.

This is because it connotes a theme of innocence and childlike freedom that Shaun
no longer possesses due to his previous experiences with Combo. The sound
reminds the audience that this is something Shaun is not able to achieve as he’s
lived through such harsh events that he doesn’t obtain any of the care free nature
kids have.

A significant use of sound in the final sequence is the non-diegetic song during the
last scene.

This is because the melancholic tone of the song re-enforces the melancholic
themes of the film and how Shaun’s life has been dulled out by his involvement with
Combo.
Including editing techniques,
and pace.

A significant use of editing in the final sequence is the dissolve from the scene of
Shaun holding his mum’s hand to a shot of the sky.

This is because it indicates that his mum has helped him to find the courage to get
up and go outside to throw away the flag. The dissolve suggests that the comfort
from his mum helps Shaun find the ability to move on from his past.
