ANTISEPTICS
WHAT ARE ANTISEPTICS?
Are chemicals, such as soap, vinegar, and rubbing alcohol, that kill
pathogens.
Examples:
-Chlorhexidine and other biguanides: These are used on open wounds and for
bladder irrigation.
ANTIBIOTICS
WHAT ARE ANTIBIOTICS?
Are medicines that target bacteria or fungi.
Examples:
-Amoxicillin: Amoxicillin is used to treat many different types of infection
caused by bacteria, such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, and infections of
the ear, nose, throat, skin, or urinary tract.
-Doxycycline: Is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as
acne, urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, respiratory infections, eye
infections, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, periodontitis (gum disease), and
others.
-Cephalexin: Is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including upper
respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, urinary infections and
bone infections.
-Ciprofloxacin: Is used to treat different types of bacterial infections. It is also
used to treat people who have been exposed to anthrax or certain types of
plague.
VACCINES
WHAT ARE VACCINES?
Are substances that contain the antigen of a pathogen.
Examples:
-Chicken pox vaccine: Varicella vaccine can prevent chickenpox. Varicella
vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines. Also, a child
between 12 months and 12 years of age might receive varicella vaccine
together with MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine in a single shot,
known as MMRV.
-Hepatitis A vaccine: Hepatitis A vaccine can prevent hepatitis A.
Hepatitis A is a serious liver disease. It is usually spread through close
personal contact with an infected person or when a person unknowingly
ingests the virus from objects, food, or drinks that are contaminated by small
amounts of stool (poop) from an infected person.
-Influenza vaccine: Influenza vaccine can prevent influenza (flu).
Flu is a contagious disease that spreads around the United States every year,
usually between October and May. Anyone can get the flu, but it is more
dangerous for some people. Infants and young children, people 65 years of age
and older, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions or a
weakened immune system are at greatest risk of flu complications.
Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and ear infections are examples of flu-
related complications. If you have a medical condition, such as heart disease,
cancer or diabetes, flu can make it worse.
