Work on your scene – finish plotting and start working dialogue in. We need conflict
to energize the scene.
Tall John and 47 were picking cotton with 84. Master Tobias rides by on his big white
stallion. Tall John goes to greet Master Tobias. Eighty-four is surprised at Tall John’s
brazenness and confidence approaching Master Tobias.
Master Tobias chastises the two for not working fast enough picking the cotton. Tall John
apologizes profusely and says that the only thing he evah wants to do is make his mastuh
happy, cause then I’m happy to, says Tall John.
I was shakin’ like a leaf, terrified that Master Tobias would unravel the huge bullwhip he
had rolled up and tied to his saddle. Whenever he felt that a slave wasn’t workin’ hard
enough, he’d unravel the great snake of a whip and lay into a slave, tearing the flesh on
his back. Tall John placates Master Tobias, who rides away without hurting either slave.
The late afternoon sun beat down upon my head like the hot breath of the devil himself.
Tall John and I had been picking cotton since early morning. I was so exhausted and
thirsty I couldn’t see properly: the cotton balls were all blurring together into one white
mass.

Vocabulary:
haughty arrogantly superior and disdainful (Someone who acts incredibly snobby)
The haughty kid never did what he was told. This doesn’t tell me that you understand the
definition of the word.
After being asked to clean the classroom whiteboards, the new rich student haughtily

The man sneered when he was taking a photo when he doesn’t want to. Mixed up.

• On Page 100, Tall John says, “free is when you say yay or nay
about what you will and will not do. Nobody can give you freedom. All freedom
is, is you.” What theme of the book does this dialogue relate to?
It dialogue the theme freedom. The dialogue relates to the theme of freedom. (On
the right track.)
It relates to free will and choice.
If you have free will, you have the capacity to make decisions or perform actions
independent of what anyone, or the state, tells you to do. This means that you can
make your own choices about something.
• On Page 101 – Tall John does something remarkable to Tweenie.
What is it?
He said that he will get some sugar for Tweenie for being so sweet. √
• On Page 103 - What attitude needs to change in 47 on his last day
in the slave cabin, before they could go to freedom? (Think of the “chains of
freedom.”)
He has to take care of him self. The attitude that needs to change in 47 is the belief that he
doesn’t have to be dependent upon the Master for feeding and clothing him.
• The author Walter Mosley uses powerful similes. Can you find at
least one in this chapter? Can you explain it?
? “His words were so wild that they felt like mosquitoes buzzing around my ears.”
It means that 47 was so confused by what Tall John was saying that his words were just
noise.
Use dialogue – make it logical, use proper grammar and punctuation. Show don’t
tell, so use good description. Finish it.
