brazenness and confidence approaching Master Tobias.
Master Tobias chastises the two for not working fast enough picking the cotton. Tall John
apologizes profusely and says that the only thing he evah wants to do is make his mastuh
happy, cause then I’m happy to, says Tall John.
I was shakin’ like a leaf, terrified that Master Tobias would unravel the huge bullwhip he
had rolled up and tied to his saddle. Whenever he felt that a slave wasn’t workin’ hard
enough, he’d unravel the great snake of a whip and lay into a slave, tearing the flesh on
his back. Tall John placates Master Tobias, who rides away without hurting either slave.

The late afternoon sun beat down upon my head like the hot breath of the devil himself.
Tall John and I had been picking cotton since early morning. I was so exhausted and
thirsty I couldn’t see properly: the cotton balls were all blurring together into one white
mass.

Chapter 10

• On Page 100, Tall John says, “free is when you say yay or nay
about what you will and will not do. Nobody can give you freedom. All freedom
is, is you.” What theme of the book does this dialogue relate to?
It dialogue the theme freedom. The dialogue relates to the theme of freedom. (On
the right track.)
It relates to free will and choice.
If you have free will, you have the capacity to make decisions or perform actions
independent of what anyone, or the state, tells you to do. This means that you can
make your own choices about something.
• On Page 101 – Tall John does something remarkable to Tweenie.

He said that he will get some sugar for Tweenie for being so sweet. √
• On Page 103 - What attitude needs to change in 47 on his last day
in the slave cabin, before they could go to freedom? (Think of the “chains of
freedom.”)
He has to take care of him self. The attitude that needs to change in 47 is the belief that he
doesn’t have to be dependent upon the Master for feeding and clothing him.
• The author Walter Mosley uses powerful similes. Can you find at
least one in this chapter? Can you explain it?
? “His words were so wild that they felt like mosquitoes buzzing around my ears.”
It means that 47 was so confused by what Tall John was saying that his words were just
noise.

Present Tense Exercise (If we have time)

Find and underline the subjects and verbs in the following paragraph. The verbs should
all be in the present tense. Correct the subject-verb agreement problems.

Subjects and verbs must agree in number. In addition to the explanations on this page,
also see the post on Subject—Verb Agreement.

• If the subject is singular, the verb must be singular too.

Example: She writes every day.
Exception: When using the singular "they," use plural verb forms.
Example: The participant expressed satisfaction with their job. They are currently
in a managerial role at the organization.

• If the subject is plural, the verb must also be plural.

Example: They write every day.

Dr. Miller state in her article that men and women is different emotionally and
physically. She believes that men avoids emotional issues, but women are more
compassionate and sensitive. Miller face the fact about the two different sexes.
They acts and thinks very differently about ways of communication. Women tends
to looks at problems in several different ways but men looks at problems objectively
only. I knows that this point are quite true in the U.S. because the husband always
talk about sports while the wife want to talk about relationships and feelings. Men
generally makes a lot of jokes and they likes to talk in public, but woman are much more
serious and they hardly ever speaks in public.

SENTENCE FRAGMENTS AND RUN-ON SENTENCES

To write sentences correctly, you must know the difference between a sentence fragment
and a run-on sentence.
● A sentence fragment fails to be a sentence because it can’t stand on its own. It doesn’t
have an independent clause. It’s incomplete. Example: Since she came here.
● A run-on sentence is an ungrammatical sentence where two or more independent
clauses are joined without a conjunction. Example: Randy is a sweet boy he really
loves animals.

State “fragment” if the sentence is incomplete, “run-on” if two independent clauses are
joined without a conjunction, or “complete” if it is a complete sentence.

The girl with the pretty freckles.
In the morning before breakfast.
