RICA A. PEREZ Education Program Supervisor Session Objectives: At the end of the session, the teacher- participants are expected to:
1. explain the current data on performance
of Filipino learners in the Local, National and International Assessments 2. identify current issues and trends in teaching mathematics in the Philippines Session Objectives: 3. reflect on the current practices in teaching mathematics ACTIVITY 1. Divide the participants into 7 groups 2. Every group select a leader, secretary, and presenter 3. Each members will share currents issues in the international, national, regional, and school in mathematics education they know 4. Share the consolidated answers of members by the assigned presenters ANALYSIS • How did you find the activity? • What are the common issues shared by each group? • What are your solutions to these issues/challenges? PISA 2018 RESULT • Participating in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for the first time in 2018, the Philippines ranked second to the last among 79 participating countries and economies in mathematics MEAN SCORE OF ASEAN COUNTRIES MEAN SCORE BY REGION PROFICIENCY LEVEL BY REGION CURRENT ISSUES • Mathematics is designed as formal teaching, centered on learning techniques and memorizing rules whose rationale is not evident to the learners. • Learners do not know which needs are met by the mathematics topics introduced or how they are linked to known concepts. CURRENT ISSUES • A deep understanding of mathematics content is solely lacking among mathematics teachers • Teachers’ poor preparation in identifying effective pedagogies for teaching specific content material to particular group of learners CURRENT ISSUES • Mathematics teachers find it daunting to implement some general learning strategies such as the use of cooperative learning and also to manage their learners that are engaged in such learning activities. CURRENT ISSUES • Links to the real world are weak, generally too artificial to be convincing and applications are stereotypical. • There are few experimental practices and modeling activities. • Technology is quite rarely used in a relevant manner • Learners have little autonomy in their mathematical work and often merely reproduce activities • TRENDS • Before discussing formulas, it is better to let the learners discover certain patterns by some examples with the use of computing devices • Formulation of proofs is better when learners are able to “interact” with the figures • TRENDS Microsoft Excel can be used to: • develop pattern recognition • discuss relationships between quantities, what changes and what are constant • Generate histograms, graphs, and in the interpretation of statistical data • Model solving simple word problems • TRENDS The use of other softwares: • Microsoft Math • Derived Algebra Software • Cabri Geometry Software • Geogebra • Desmos • TRENDS The use of instructional videos: • Readily available in the internet • Teacher-made • Provides an alternative to classroom learning • Interactive and creative in presenting subject matters APPLICATION Reflect on this THANK YOU!
