Chapter 1 - Introduction

Section 1

Daily routine questions


Introduce yourself, ask the student to tell a little bit
about themselves.
Here we do not expect the student to be very fluent, this
exercise is to help the teacher understand the areas
where the student needs guidance and help. If the
student speaks in the local language/ mother tongue, do
not interrupt or correct them.

What is your name?


Tell me a little about yourself.
Tell me about your family.
What is your general daily routine?
What time did you get up?
What did you have for breakfast?
Tell me in detail what you did today?
What do you plan to do after the class?

Elicit detailed answers from them and also encourage them to ask
you questions about your day. Ask them to observe how you
answer their questions and how you form sentences. Ask them to
think in English when speaking English.
Section 2

Practice Conversations
There are some short example conversations for practice.
Ask the student to read out the conversations aloud twice
and then do a role play (like a drama), you take on one
character and the student the other. In the next round
switch roles.

How have you been? (in the time since I last saw you)
I am fine thank you.

Nice to meet you .(at the starting of the conversation)


It was nice meeting you. (when you are ending the
conversation)

1. Introducing oneself

Keerthi : I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Keerthi.

Mary : Hi Keerthi! I’m Mary.

Keerthi : Hi Mary! Good to meet you. What do you do?

Mary : I am a teacher. What about you?

Keerthi : I’m an artist. Where are you from?

Mary : I’m from Bangalore. How about you?

Keerthi : I’m from Hyderabad itself. What brings you here?

Mary : I’m visiting my brother. He lives in Jubilee hills.

Karan : Paras, I’d like you to meet Madhu.

Paras : How do you do?

Madhu : How do you do.

Karan : Madhu works for Tata Motors.

Paras : I work for Wipro. What do you do in Tata Motors?

Madhu : I work in the accounts department. What do you do?

Paras : I work as a software engineer.


3. Two neighbours meet after a long time

Radhika : Hi Arun, how are you?

Arun : Hi Radhika, I am fine, thank you. How are


you?

Radhika : I'm fine. It's a lovely day isn’t it?

Arun : Yes, the weather is very pleasant. How is


everyone at home?

Radhika : All good, thank you. What have you


been upto?

Arun : I’ve taken up a new job.

Radhika : That’s great. Good luck to you!

Arun : Thanks for your wishes. See you later.

Radhika : Bye! See you!


Section 3

Create a conversation

Create a conversation based on the given situation.


If the student is finding it difficult to frame
sentences, he/she can take help from section 2. Ask
the student to create a conversation based on the
following situation:

Assume the roles of Jaya and Sudha who are


meeting after a long time. You can take help from
section 2 and recreate a scene.

Conversation cues:
Jaya: Hi Sudha, it’s been so long since I saw you.
Sudha:

Jaya: I am fine thank you. How have you been?

Section 4

Reading comprehension

A story or a text is given to read out loud. Read,


understand and answer the questions.
On Sunday, Ravi gets up at 10 o'clock. Then he
reads his newspaper in the kitchen. He has
breakfast at 11.30 am and then he telephones his
mother in Baroda.
In the afternoon, at 1.00 pm, Ravi plays tennis
with his sister and after that, they eat lunch in a
restaurant. At 6.00 pm, Ravi swims for one hour
and then he goes by bike to his brother's house.
They talk and listen to music.
Ravi watches television in the evening and drinks
a glass of warm milk. He goes to bed at 11.30.

Communicative Grammar

I'm
'I'm' is an abbreviation for the word 'I AM.' It is used in combination with
other words to tell someone about yourself or to describe something you
are doing.

Here are some examples:


"I'm so tired."
"I'm confused."
"I'm happy."
"I'm twenty three years old."
"I'm hungry."
"I'm nervous."
"I'm excited."
"I'm leaving for work."
"I'm thirsty."
"I'm from Mysore."

You can also add descriptive words with 'I'm' such as:
"I'm extremely tired."
"I'm very happy."
"I'm terribly hungry."
"I am super excited."
"I'm very nervous."

Section 6
Homework
Ask them to speak 5 sentences about the
homework video. Also, ask them to make a list of
5 difficult words from the video clipping and
refer it in the dictionary and construct one
sentence from each word and tell you in the next
class.
