ABSTRACT

As a result, music is an expression of people's emotional expression and communication

elements. The state of expression has been subjected to the element of interaction by bringing
instruments along with it. The kanun instrument, which is one of these instruments, has been
included in the interaction and is one of the instruments that attracts attention due to many
features such as its performance, the multiplicity of its strings, its timbre, and enthusiastic
playing patterns. Although it has many features that need to be researched, one of its most
important features is the way it is performed, as well as the maqamal way of performance it
contains; it has the ability to capture harmonic timbre, to throw 3 and 5 chords and many
variations on this.

It is possible to liken the hybrid performance style of the kanun instrument to a riot of colors.
This situation is inviting for research. As a result of this research, it may bring results such as
different perspectives to future performer generations, bringing a modern style to their
performances, and opening new windows to playing techniques. However, the most important
issue in this regard is to learn why or how the chord techniques that occur during performance
are formed, and to investigate what the chord feeling that develops during playing is for.
Another situation is to prepare questions about the way of performance and to interpret and
write down the answers.

My research titled "Descriptive Analysis on Polyphony Practices in Kanun Instrument" is a

descriptive study. In this study, first of all, a literature review was conducted and questions on
the subject were prepared. These questions will be asked to people who we will accept as cult
names in the kanun instrument, and the answers of the questions will be interpreted.
Afterwards, a work will be determined and these names will be asked to perform it. The
performances of these cult performers will be analyzed and a conclusion will be reached.
