My.Blog 3.1: Personal Value Discovery

1. Answer: b.

Choosing a collectivistic path shows that I prefer teamwork to an individualistic

strategy of solving problems and decision making. Teamwork is an important skill in the

21st Century globalized world. The acquisition of teamwork skills is recommended in

schools, workplaces, and the community to overcome 21st Century issues. Engagement

in teamwork processes of handling assessments would offer me benefits, including

cultural competence, collaboration skills growth, and effective communication.

2. Answer: b.

Cultural globalization has created cultural competence among people hence

promoting intermarriage, trade, and building of multicultural communities. I feel that

respecting the value of respect is an important strategy of accomplishing cultural

competence. I hence feel that respecting my parents by telling my romantic partner to

understand their opinion will enable me to uphold the value of respect (Ting-Toomey &

Chung, 2005). Although this might appear like a large power distance in the short run, it

will enable my parents to understand the importance of cultural competence. Eventually,

interacting with a person from a different culture will enable them to acquire cultural

competence in the long run, which will be beneficial to them, me, and my intimate

partner.

3. Answer: a.

Requesting my neighbors to terminate their party is a highly risky decision since

it can create a conflict. However, success today requires people to have low uncertainty

avoidance. Studies have shown that Low uncertainty avoidance enables people to develop

cultural competence through the willingness to experience and learn new cultural values.

4. Answer: a.

The globalized world requires the destruction of conventional patriarchal systems,

which is nurtured at the infant stage of individuals' lives through play. The new feminine

pattern requires the adoption of new gender policies (Volpp, 2001). Judging the case from

a feminine perspective, children have the right to choose any item of play that offers them

maximum satisfaction and happiness. This is a strategy that will enable children to accept

gender equality by default.

The results indicate that although I have a degree of individualism, my collectivism is

much higher. Although I value and strive to preserve my family traditions, I have acquired

cultural competence with time (Sue, 2001). I have gained more understanding of the importance

of other people’s cultures.

My self-construals have changed over the years, from independent to interdependent

ones. I have realized that the world presents me with more complex challenges as I advance

through the stages of life. I have realized that involving my friends in addressing these problems

promotes the generation of speedy and accurate responses. I like my interdependent self-

construals since it enables me to solve problems quickly and easily by involving other people. It

enables me to benefit from their knowledge and skills with regard to problem-solving and

decision-making.

Horizontal collectivism focuses on the interdependence but questioning some decisions

made by other people. My parents support my horizontal collectivist perspective by encouraging

me to express my emotions. They sometimes allow me to question their judgements. This has

supported my sense of accountability over my own life and behaviors. I hence feel that parents

should incorporate flexibility during enforcement of family rules. Notably, parents are humans,

therefore, can make erroneous and biased rules. Sometimes, they should allow children to

question some of their decisions. It is a process that nurtures teamwork among children in

solving ethical dilemmas.

My choice of college was influenced by the excellence of other people in the fields of

business and technology. Microsoft founder and Google founder were students at Harvard

University. However, their success was determined by their self-determination through a high

internal locus of control. Although they did not graduate from the University, Google and

Microsoft founders managed to transform the world through technology. I feel that emulating

them would enable me to achieve my dream. However, although high internal locus enables a

person to think critically and work hard in solving problems, it can also inhibit the urge to

collaborate with other people in society.
