El Filibusterismo or also known as “Reign of Greed” in English, is the second novel written by our

national hero José Rizal and was first published in the year 1891 in Ghent,Belgium. It is a sequel to
his first book called Noli Me Tángere (latin for “Touch Me Not”) like the first book, it was
composed in Spanish, increasing the probability that the Spanish Authorities would be the first to
pursue it, precisely as Rizal intended. The novel centers on the main character Crisóstomo Ibarra
now returning for vengeance as “simoun”. The novel depicts a dark theme (in the contrast to the
hopeful atmosphere present in the first novel) in which it shows the country’s issues and how the
protagonist shifts towards addressing his nation’s problem using forceful methods, prior to his
endeavor to reform the country’s system, which proved ineffectual and appeared unattainable due
to the Spaniards corrupt treatment towards the Filipinos.
