Performance

This type of music video will most often feature

the band/singer performing their song with
choreographic visuals on screen. The people
featured may well be celebrities or actors lip
syncing to the music.

The purpose for this style is to see the star of

the film perform, and it is often shot in one
location to make them the main focus.

Sweet Child ‘O Mine - Guns ‘N’ Roses

Narrative
This type follows a storyline and one that carries
on as the song plays, the purpose of this, often
similar to that of a short film . They often feature
actors playing the character seen onscreen, or the
artist(s) themselves play them.

They are set across multiple and different

locations to follow that storyline, and very rarely
feature the artist performing.

Stan - Eminem
Parody/Reference/Homage
This style is one that imitates another
piece of work or artist, or period, even
ones from other types of media. They
are used to show special honour and
respect to something that they may like
or something popular, publicly.

However, it can also be an imitation of

the style of a particular writer, artist or
genre with deliberate exaggeration for
comic effect. Material Girl -
Madonna
Interpretive

This style uses the lyrics of a song to

perform a narration function, making
what we see onscreen quite literal.

They will often feature the artist/band

performing whilst set through different
locations.

of Wayne
Concept

This style will often include an

idea or the themes created with
the song through artistic
expression, it may be CGI, stop
motion or trippy visuals.
