As a student of class XII, I did this project
entitled, ‘Finding the Refractive index of
liquid by concave mirror.’ I owe a deep sense of
gratitude to my physics teacher, Ms Juliet
Christopher whose valuable advice, guidance
helped me in doing this project from conception
to completion.
At the same time, I cannot forget to express my
thankfulness to our coordinator, Ms Anita Sah
and our principal, Ms Avnita Bir for their
generous patronage and constant encouragement.
Finally, I am thankful to my parents and friends
for giving me a helping hand at every step of
the project.

OBJECTIVE:
To determine the refractive index of three
different liquids: Sprite, water, and coconut
oil, using a concave mirror.
Apparatus:
- Concave mirror
- Light source
- Metre scale
- Optical Needle
- Spherometer
- An iron stand with base and clamp arrangement
- Transparent Liquids(Sprite/ Coconut oil/Water)
Theory
Refraction and Snell's Law:
Refraction is the bending of light as it passes
from one medium into another, a phenomenon
crucial in the study of optics. When light
travels through different materials, its speed
changes, causing it to change direction. The
degree of bending depends on the refractive
indices of the materials involved.
It is expressed as:
Speed of Light:
Light travels at varying speeds in different
materials, faster in less dense media (e.g.,
air) and slower in denser ones (e.g., glass).
Focusing Light:
Concave mirrors cause parallel rays of light to
converge at a focal point. This property makes
them ideal for directing light in a controlled
manner.
Procedure:
1. Set up the concave mirror on the base of the
iron stand with its reflective side facing
upward.
For Sprite:

1. 37.3 28 1.33
2. 37.3 27.8 1.34
3. 37.3 28.3 1.31
Calculations:
For Water:
Actual µ = 1.34
Observed µ = 1.3
Error Percentage:-
For Sprite:
Actual µ = 1.395
Observed µ = 1.326
Error Percentage:-
= |(Actual µ - Observed µ)| × 100 / Actual µ
= (1.395 - 1.326) ×100 / 1.395
= 4.9 %
For Water :
Calculated Refractive Index (µ) = 1.3
Error Percent (%) = 2.5 %
For Sprite:
Calculated Refractive Index (µ) = 1.326
Error Percent (%) = 4.9 %
