EXERCISE 1: (4 points)

Consider the oak box described in the figure containing air inside. The temperature of its upper surface is
T1=50ºC. The effective surroundings temperature for radiation purposes is Tsur=150ºC, and the external air

temperature is Ta=30ºC. The emissivity of the oak is 0.9 and the convection heat transfer coefficient of the
external air is h=20W/m2K. Assuming one dimensional steady-state conduction:

1. Obtain the het flux q’’ on the external upper surface of the box.
2. Obtain the temperature T2.
3. Obtain the equation which describes the temperature distribution in the air inside the box, consider
the origin of “x” coordinate as indicated in the figure.
Other data: =5.6710-8W/m2K4, koak=0.17W/mK, kair=0.03W/mK

EXERCISE 2: (6 points)

Two vertical surfaces of area A=100cm2 each one and with a surface temperature Ts=70ºC, are placed in
parallel at a distance L=20cm and conected between each other by solid bars, as represented in the figure.
Both surfaces are exposed to an external air, characterized by a convection heat transfer coefficient of
h=110W/m2K and tempereture Ta=20ºC. The bars are made of iron (k=79W/mK) and diameter is D=1cm.
Obtain the numbers of bars (N) that are needed so the sum of the dissipated heat power by both surfaces is
200W.
