Captain Alec was very pleasant, makes you feel relaxed, he is very good at re wording the
questions and repeating.
He started off by asking what my previous experience was, I explained to him and then
explained why I had failed the first time. He then stated that I am the Master of a 2999gt yacht
for the exam. These questions are not in order, was hard for me to remember exactly how it all
went down.
Q: TRS, explain the different semi circles, what makes the dangerous quadrant what it is, what
track they normally follow, what months, he also asked about the navigable side.
Q: Rhumbline and great circle routes, why and when would you use these? I mentioned
composite routes and explained because of weather etc.
Q: What we need to do for the DOS for ISPS?
Q: How do the crew know their hours of work and rest
Q: Masters inspections, asked about cabin inspections and what I would check, how often.
Q: He asked me when I last did my advanced fire? He then asked how I would conduct a search
for a person in a cabin full of smoke?
Q: Asked about Port State, Paris MOU, when are the inspections for each risk vessel.
Q: Actions if receiving a DSC 5miles from shore?
Q: Would you receive Navtex messages in the middle of the Atlantic?
Q: What are the Inmarsat regions? Are they available in the polar regions?
Q: Asked if I knew about a Med moor, how would you do it? I used my hands and
explained/walked him through the whole docking process.
Q: What’s in an SEA?
Q: What is an ENG1 and where is it stated that it is valid
Q: New 2nd officer joining, what certs would he need, asked about the CEC and CRA
He then went back to the original radar screen and asked what my actions would be if it was in
restricted vis, once I gave him my answer for that, he said “well I think that’s enough, you have
passed”!!! I was super happy, he didn’t have any negative feedback and said good luck, his
colleagues would be sending through my NOE shortly. I received it within a couple of hours!
Thank you Fred!! I highly recommend you get a study buddy who has some sort of idea what
they are talking about and preferably someone who has worked as an officer on a large yacht.
Good luck to you all!
