Lesson details

Title of lesson: We’re going on a leaf hunt!


Brief description of lesson: Students will embark on an interactive adventure, exploring the school’s
surroundings with the guidance of adults. This immersive experience will allow them to work alongside
their peers and get in touch with nature.

Material/resources required: The book “We’re going on a leaf hunt” by Steve Metzger, Ziplocs,
Organization of space: No changes must be made to the layout. Students will use the classroom tables
when needed as regularly.
Transitions: Students will be transitioning from calendar straight into the storybook. Therefore, they will
already be seated on the floor before the activity begins. Once the storybook has been read and it is
time to proceed to the next step of the activity. Students will be asked to walk to the hallway and get
dressed for outdoor. Once students return from the walk, they will be asked to wash their hands and
wait on the floor in front of the smartboard. When the activity is over, they are told to go to free play.

Procedure

Introduction: The teacher will read the book “We’re going on a leaf hunt” by Steve Metzger. When the
story is done. Students will be asked if they enjoyed the book. Then, the teacher will spark a discussion
by asking questions such as “Have you ever been on a leaf hunt, if yes what did you do or find? Where
did you go for this leaf hunt?”. Then, the teacher will tell students that they will be participating in a leaf
hunt today. The teacher will give the students a list of rules:

-Walk with a partner.


-Do not pass your teacher.
-Do not walk on the street.
-Stay quiet and calm.
-Always look in front of you.
-Walk in a straight line.
-Do not collect anything else but leaves (no sticks, rocks, acorns, etc).

Development: Students will begin their walk around the school neighborhood while being guided by a
teacher and childcare worker. They will collect leaves and put them in a bag while obeying the
classroom rules. Then, they will return to the school classroom.

Conclusion: Students will be sorting the leaves they have collected on their walk, categorizing them
based on their colors. They will each have a turn to come place their leaves on the laminated board,
below the represented color.
