PERFORMANCE TASK 1
PROBLEM SOLVING
Directions: Make word problems on the topic, RATES of CHANGE and use the space provided for every
problem. Show the complete solution. (5pts each)
A car is traveling along a straight road. The car's
position at time t (in seconds) is given by the function
2
f ( t )=2 t + 3t +5, where f(t) represents the distance in
meters from a reference point.

(a) Calculate the average rate of change of the car's

position between t = 2 and t = 4.
(b) Determine the instantaneous rate of change of
the car's position at t = 3.
(c) If the car continues moving with the same
acceleration, what will be its position after 5
seconds?

Solution:
(a) To calculate the average rate of change between
t = 2 and t = 4, we need to find the change in position
divided by the change in time. The formula for
average rate of change is:

∆ f f ( x ) −f ( x0 )
Average Rate of Change = =
∆x x−x o
∆ f f ( 4 )−f ( 2 )
= =
∆x 4−2
2
f ( 4 )=2 ( 4 ) +3 ( 4 ) +5=32+12+ 5=49
2
f ( 2 )=2 (2 ) +3 ( 2 ) +5=8+6+ 5=19
∆ f 49−19 30
Average Rate of Change = = = =15
∆x 4−2 2

Therefore, the average rate of change between t

= 2 and t = 4 is 15 meters per second.

(b) To find the instantaneous rate of change at t = 3

d
f ' ( t )= ( 2t 2 +3 t+5 ) =4 t+3
dt
'
f ( 3 ) =4 ( 3 )+3=12+3=15

Therefore, the instantaneous rate of change at t =

3 is 15 meters per second.

(c) Determine the position of the car after 5 seconds.

2
f ( 5 )=2(5) + 3 (5 )+ 5=50+15+ 5=70

Therefore, the car's position after 5 seconds is 70

meters.
A water tank is being filled with water at a constant
rate. The height of the water in the tank at time t (in
minutes) is given by the function h ( t )=0.2 t 2 +0.5 t ,
where h(t) represents the height in meters.
(a) Calculate the average rate of change of the
water level between t = 2 and t = 5.
(b) Determine the instantaneous rate of change
of the water level at t = 3.
(c) If the water continues to be filled at the same
rate, how long will it take for the water level to
reach 4 meters?
Solution:
(a) Calculate the average rate of change
between t = 2 and t = 5, we need to find the
change in height divided by the change in
time.
Average Rate of Change = (h(b) - h(a)) / (b - a)

Average Rate of Change = (h(5) - h(2)) / (5

- 2)

Calculating h(5) and h(2) using the given

function:

h(5) = 0.2(5)^2 + 0.5(5) = 0.2(25) + 2.5 = 5

+ 2.5 = 7.5

h(2) = 0.2(2)^2 + 0.5(2) = 0.2(4) + 1 = 0.8 +

1 = 1.8

Plugging in the values:

Average Rate of Change = (7.5 - 1.8) / (5 -

2) = 5.7 / 3 ≈ 1.9

Therefore, the average rate of change

between t = 2 and t = 5 is approximately 1.9
meters per minute.

2. To find the instantaneous rate of change at

t = 3, we need to calculate the derivative of
the given function h(t) = 0.2t^2 + 0.5t with
respect to t.

h'(t) = d/dt(0.2t^2 + 0.5t)

= 0.4t + 0.5

Plugging in t = 3:

h'(3) = 0.4(3) + 0.5 = 1.2 + 0.5 = 1.7

Therefore, the instantaneous rate of

change at t = 3 is 1.7 meters per minute.

3. To determine how long it will take for the

water level to reach 4 meters, we can set the
given function h(t) equal to 4 and solve for t:

0.2t^2 + 0.5t = 4

Rearranging the equation:

0.2t^2 + 0.5t - 4 = 0

Unfortunately, this equation cannot be

easily solved using algebraic methods.
However, we can use numerical methods or
a calculator to approximate the solution.
Using numerical methods, we find that t is
approximately 6.725 minutes.

Therefore, it will take approximately 6.725

minutes for the water level to reach 4 meters.

I hope this example helps! Let me know if

1. The fixed height of an oblique cylinder is 12

units.
a. Find the instantaneous rate of change of its
volume with respect to the radius of its base.
b. Determine the rate of change of the volume of the
oblique cylinder when r = 6, r = 8, and r= 10 .
c. Find the average rate of change of the volume on
the interval of the radius [3, 5] and [7, 9]

Solution:
(a). Let r and h represent the cylinder's radius and
height, respectively. Given that h = 12 is a fixed
height, the oblique cylinder's volume is given by
V = r2h
= 12r2
The instantaneous rate of change of the
volume with respect to the radius, as
determined by the power rule, is therefore
dVdr =
24r
This indicates that a change of one unit in the
sphere's radius results in a change of 24r
cubic units in the volume.

b. The rates of change of the volume of the

oblique cylinder are
V’ (6) = 24 (6) = 144 cubic
units
V’ (8) = 24 (8) = 192 cubic
units
V’ (10) = 24 (10) = 240 cubic
units

(c) The average rate of change of the volume on

the interval of the radius [3, 5] and [7, 9] are
V(5) - V(3) 5-3 = 12(5)2 - 12(3)22 =
12[(5)2 - (3)2]2 = 12(16)2 = 96
V(9) - V(7) 9-7 = 12(9)2 - 12(7)22 =
12[(9)2 - (7)2]2 = 12(32)2 = 192
