Project Summary
Around two centuries after the first industrial revolution, the manufacturing industry has been drastically
transformed and we have learned better ways to manufacture. However, efforts still have to be done to be able to
embrace future technological and environmental challenges. The increased awareness about sustainability
issues indeed results in changes in markets and customer behavior as well as a growing demand for sustainable
products and services. There is thus a need for a new generation of graduates fitted not only with strong basics in
this field but also with a new vision of what manufacturing has to be.
To this end, the Ecole Centrale de Lyon (ECL), with its internal school École Nationale d'Ingénieurs de
Saint-Étienne - ENISE (FR), in collaboration with Mines Saint-Etienne - EMSE (FR), the Technical University of
Chemnitz - TUC (Germany), the University of Ljubljana - ULJ (Slovenia), the Politechnical University of Torino -
PoliTO (Italy) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) are glad to propose a globally
unique Joint Master Programme in Manufacturing 4.0 by intElligent and susTAinable technologies (META 4.0).
This Master programme innovatively combines theoretical and applied courses with internships in a
multidisciplinary environment covering from the fundamentals on manufacturing technologies, material sciences,
characterisation techniques up to the cutting edge research in four key specialization for the Industrie 4.0 as
Digital, Clean, Sustainable and Smart Manufacturing. The goal of META 4.0 is to provide graduates with the
knowledge and skills needed by industry to be competitive but also face the future world challenges induced by
the twin transitions.
