Experiment No: 08

Title of the Experiment: Three Phase Fault detection using Simulink.

Objective:
1. To develop Simulink based 1Ø or 3Ø line simulation and modelling.
2. To analyze the Fault current and design of protection relay design.
Learning Outcome: After completing this experiment the students will be able to:
1. Understand the types of fault occurring in the power system.
2. Realize the fault clearing by relay.
Theory:
Simulink is a block diagram environment for multi domain simulation and Model-
Based Design. It supports simulation, automatic code generation and continuous
testing and verification of embedded systems. Simulink provides a graphical
editor, customizable block libraries and solvers for modelling and simulating
dynamic systems. It is integrated with MATLAB , enabling user to incorporate
MATLAB algorithms into models and export simulation results to MATLAB for
further analysis.
Three Phase Fault: The Electric Power System is divided into many different
sections. One of which is the transmission system, where power is transmitted
from generating stations and substations via transmission lines into consumers.
Both methods could encounter various types of malfunctions is usually referred to
as a “Fault”. Fault is simply defined as a number of undesirable but unavoidable
incidents can temporarily disturb the stable condition of the power system that
occurs when the insulation of the system fails at any point.
Three Phase Fault Current Analysis and Simulink modelling:
Procedure:
At First we started the MathLAB software and then type”simulink” on code editor.
Then we created a new model project from the simulink library browser
menu. Then we go to simscape → simpowersystems → specialized technoelectrical
sources →Three phase source (50HZ). Add three phase source to model window.
Then we connected to simscape → simpower systems → specialized technology →
elements → Three phase breaker. Added three phase breaker,Three phase RLC
load and Three phase fault. After that we go to simscape → simpowersystems →
specialized technology → measurement→ Three phase V-I measurement. Added
three phase V-I measurement unit. then we go to simulink→ sources →step.
Added step function.Added to simulink→ sink → scope. Add 2 scope functions.
Then we connected to simulink→ signal routing →demux. Add 2 demux
functions.and we connected stair Generator & powergui (discreate).and used
(Schematic of Relay Design from Experiment No 07) by sub system.
Then we connected the different components with each other like the figure -1.

Figure 1: Schematic of three phase fault.

Simulation:
After completing the whole diagram, run this Math LAB Simulink file with a 1 sec
stop time .Then we saw the outputs of scope and scope 1 respectively. Then we
changeed the values of the Three Phase source, RL load and three phase breaker
tripping time time (0,.04,0.19,0.20) & Amplitude (0,1,0,0). And observe the
variations in the output.
Output:
Discussion: In this lab, we focused on designing a three-phase fault detection
system using Simulink. The objective of the experiment was to create a relay
system capable of detecting and responding to faults in a three-phase power
system. Simulink provided us with a platform to implement and simulate various
fault scenarios, enabling us to evaluate the performance of the relay system.
