Proud fo Be Canadian
Canada is considered one of the best countries in the world to live in.
When Canadians travel abroad, they are greeted warmly. Foreigners
appreciate Canada for its diversity both in its people and its land. Canada is
also remarkable for many other reasons that may be unknown even to
Canadians.
Canada is home to the world’s longest skating rink - the Rideau Canal in
Ottawa, the world’s largest bay - Hudson’s Bay, the longest national highway
- the Trans Canada, the longest coastline - 243,792 km, the world’s longest
street - Yonge Street, and the world’s tallest structure - the CN
Tower. Mount Logan in the Yukon is higher than any mountain
in Europe or Africa. Niagara Falls is a world-class spectacle
drawing millions of visitors every year.
Canada is home to internationally known icons of
culture. Singing stars such as Bryan Adams, Paul Anka,
Joni Mitchell, Celine Dion, Sarah McLachlan, Shania
Twain, Nelly Furtado, Alanis Morisette, and The
Barenaked Ladies rock band are all Canadian.
Karen Kain, a world leading prima ballerina for many
years, was born in the Toronto area. Canadian
authors such as Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro,
Carol Shields, and Jane Urquhart are among the
best fiction writers in the world today.
As a country with an international flavour,
Canada is second to none. Canada accepts
more immigrants and refugees per capita than
any other country. Since Confederation (1867),
14 million people from around the world have
made Canada their home. Toronto, Canada’s
largest city with a population of 2.5 million, is home:
to immigrants from 169 countries that speak more
than 100 different languages.
Whether it is the scenic beauty of the Rocky
Mountains, the vastness of the Prairies, the
excitement of the major urban centres, the
enormous tides of Fundy, or the rugged beauty
of Newfoundland, Canada is a country of varied
beauty and diverse cultures. As Canadians, we
can be proud to call this great nation our home.miiontccrt
