30 Proud fo Be Canadian Canada is considered one of the best countries in the world to live in. When Canadians travel abroad, they are greeted warmly. Foreigners appreciate Canada for its diversity both in its people and its land. Canada is also remarkable for many other reasons that may be unknown even to Canadians. Canada is home to the world’s longest skating rink - the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, the world’s largest bay - Hudson’s Bay, the longest national highway - the Trans Canada, the longest coastline - 243,792 km, the world’s longest street - Yonge Street, and the world’s tallest structure - the CN Tower. Mount Logan in the Yukon is higher than any mountain in Europe or Africa. Niagara Falls is a world-class spectacle drawing millions of visitors every year. Canada is home to internationally known icons of culture. Singing stars such as Bryan Adams, Paul Anka, Joni Mitchell, Celine Dion, Sarah McLachlan, Shania Twain, Nelly Furtado, Alanis Morisette, and The Barenaked Ladies rock band are all Canadian. Karen Kain, a world leading prima ballerina for many years, was born in the Toronto area. Canadian authors such as Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Carol Shields, and Jane Urquhart are among the best fiction writers in the world today. As a country with an international flavour, Canada is second to none. Canada accepts more immigrants and refugees per capita than any other country. Since Confederation (1867), 14 million people from around the world have made Canada their home. Toronto, Canada’s largest city with a population of 2.5 million, is home: to immigrants from 169 countries that speak more than 100 different languages. Whether it is the scenic beauty of the Rocky Mountains, the vastness of the Prairies, the excitement of the major urban centres, the enormous tides of Fundy, or the rugged beauty of Newfoundland, Canada is a country of varied beauty and diverse cultures.
