Notes on the Structure of the Haram al-Sharif

The Masjid Al-Aqsa is important to Muslims because this masjid has been rebuilt and
cared for by many of the Prophets and Messengers, from the time of Adam ‫عليه السالم‬
until the time of our Prophet Muhammad ‫ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص‬

The Dome of the Rock is the masjid built by the caliph, Abdul-Malik ibn Marwan. It
gets its name because was built over the rock which marks the place where our
Prophet Muhammad ‫ ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص‬was taken up to Jannah during al-Isra wal-Miraj.

The Wailing Wall is the Western wall where Jews come to pray. It is the only
remaining wall of the temple which was built by Prophet Sulayman ‫عليه السالم‬. The
temple was destroyed by the Romans when they took over Jerusalem.

How Did
Palestine

Get Its
Name?

In Arabic, Palestine is called „Filasteen‟. Palestine in the ancient world

was part of the region of Canaan, northeast of Egypt where the
Kingdoms of Israel and Judea were located. The term „Palestine‟ was
originally a designation of an area of land in southern Canaan occupied
by a people known as the Philistines during the Bronze Age.

Notes on the Story of Prophet Yusuf ‫عليه السالم‬

Yaqoob ‫ عليه السالم‬had 13 sons, one of whom was called Yusuf. Allah blessed Yusuf ‫ عليه السالم‬with
many good virtues. Yaqoob ‫ عليه السالم‬loved Yusuf ‫ عليه السالم‬very much because he was kind,
honest and a very good son.

Prophet Yusuf‟s brothers were envious of him. One day they took him out to play with them
and they threw him down into a well.

A camel caravan was passing on its way to Egypt. When the people heard the cry of a little
boy coming from the well, they pulled him out of the well and took him with them.

After many years, when Yusuf ‫ عليه السالم‬was a grown man, he became the governor of Egypt
and he was put in charge of the harvest and grain stores. At the same time there was a
famine in the land of Palestine and Yaqoob ‫ عليه السالم‬sent Yusuf‟s brothers to Egypt to find
food. When the brothers arrived in Egypt, they didn‟t recognize their brother, Yusuf ‫عليه السالم‬

When Yusuf ‫ عليه السالم‬revealed to his brothers who he was, Yaqoob ‫ عليه السالم‬and his family left
Palestine to live in Egypt. When Yaqoob ‫ عليه السالم‬left, the Masjid al-Aqsa was neglected
because the people began to forget about Allah.

Notes on the Story of Prophet Musa ‫ عليه السالم‬and the Banu Isra‟il

Many hundreds of years after the time of Prophet Yusuf ‫عليه السالم‬, Allah sent another Prophet
and Messenger – Musa ‫ عليه السالم‬to save the descendents of Yaqoob ‫ عليه السالم‬who were enslaved
under Pharaoh, the tyrant ruler of Egypt. The descendents of Yaqoob ‫ عليه السالم‬were know as
the Banu Isra‟il or the Children of Isra‟il.

Allah sent Musa to Pharaoh to call him to worship Allah alone. But Pharaoh refused and
became arrogant. So Allah sent many punishments upon him and his people. Finally, Allah
told Musa and the Banu Isra‟il to leave Egypt by night. But Pharaoh sent his armies to chase
them. When they reached the sea, the Banu Isra‟il found no way to cross. Allah commanded
Musa to strike the water with his staff, and sea spilt into 12 pathways (one for each tribe).
The Banu Isra‟il crossed safely and when Pharaoh and his army entered the pathways, Allah
caused the sea to close on top of them and they were drowned.

Musa ‫ عليه السالم‬took the Banu Isra‟il back to Palestine to Baitul Maqdis where they found idol-
worshippers in the land. Musa ‫ عليه السالم‬commanded the Banu Isra‟il to enter the cities and
fight the disbelievers and expel them from the land that Allah had promised to them by
their father, Ibraheem ‫عليه السالم‬, but they refused to fight them and disobeyed Allah‟s
Command, so Allah left them to wander in the desert wilderness for 40 years.

It is said that both Musa and his brother, Harun ‫ عليهما السالم‬died while the Banu Isra‟il were
wandering in the desert and that Musa‟s servant, Yusha ibn Nun took Prophethood and led
them out of the desert to the city of Jericho. They marched around the city shouting
takbeer until the walls of the city collapsed! When they conquered Baitul Maqdis they held it
for a long time. It is said Prophet Yusha ‫ عليه السالم‬ruled over the Banu Isra‟il with justice and
he lived for 127 years.

The Qiblah is the

JERUSALEM MAKKAH direction we face

At the beginning of
the Prophet

Muslims used to pray
facing Jerusalem. This
was very important
because it showed the
Muslims the
importance of Al-

The Muslims prayed

When the Muslims

Madinah, they
continued to pray
towards Jerusalem for another 16-17 months. Then Allah revealed in Surah al-Baqarah 2:144
that the Muslims should change the direction of the Qiblah towards the Ka‟bah in Makkah
and this made the Prophet ‫ ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص‬happy.

Many other Muslims built

The Caliph Abdul-Malik al-

Salahuddin Ayyoubi
Liberates Al-Quds

While the Crusaders were in Jerusalem, other Muslims outside of Jerusalem were planning how to defeat their enemies
and take back Al-Quds.

Salahuddin Ayyoubi was a great leader who had united the Muslims in order to lead them into battle against the
Crusaders. In 1187 CE he defeated the Christian army to free Al-Quds once more.

When he took over Jerusalem, he didn‟t kill nor imprison the Christians. He let them go free and even helped them with
their costs of travelling to Europe.

A great leader, Nurruddin Zengi built and sponsored many madrassas across Syria and he built a beautiful minbar for
Masjid Al-Aqsa. It was originally commission in 1168 CE and later placed in the masjid by Salahuddin after he had
liberated Jerusalem. The minbar remained in the masjid until 1969 CE when it was destroyed by an arson fire set by
a disturbed Australian Christian. A reconstruction of the minbar created by an international team of experts
in Jordan was installed in its place in 2007 CE.

Salahuddin Ayyoubi
Introduction

Salahuddin was a monumental figure in Islamic history. His full name was Al-
Nasir Salahuddin Yusuf ibn Ayyoub. He was the sultan, or king, of all the
Muslim territories of Syria, Egypt, Palestine, and northern Mesopotamia. He
was also a great military commander. His greatest success was the liberation
of Jerusalem in 1187 CE, during the Crusades. Before Salahuddin’s victory,
the city had been held for almost 90 years by the Crusaders, who
were Christians from Europe.

His Early Life

Salahuddin was born in 1137 or 1138, in Tikrit, Mesopotamia (modern-

day Iraq). His family were Kurdish. Salahuddin grew up in Syria, and as a
young man, he was interested in religious studies. But when he finished
school, he joined the staff of his uncle, Asad al-Din Shirkuh, who was an
important military commander.

Sultan

After his uncle died in 1169, Salahuddin became commander of the Syrian
troops in Egypt. He also took over the position of vizier. The vizier was the
top official under the caliph, or ruler, of Egypt. Salahuddin was given the
title of Sultan and in 1171 he ended the rule of the Egyptian caliphs. He
abolished the Faatimid Shi’ee Caliphate in Egypt, restoring it to the Sunni
Abbassid dynasty. Salahuddin then worked to unite Egypt, Syria, northern
Mesopotamia, and Palestine under his rule. Using diplomacy and military
force, he achieved that goal by 1186. Salahuddin gained a reputation as a fair
but firm ruler. He devoted himself to the spread of Islam. He built masjids
and madrassas and supported Muslim scholars and preachers. He also
encouraged all Muslims to unite against the Christian Crusaders and prepared
his forces to fight the Crusader armies.
Fighting the Crusaders

Salahuddin’s efforts paid off. On July 4, 1187, he trapped and destroyed an

army of Crusaders in northern Palestine. This victory allowed his armies to
liberate the Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem and on October 2, 1187, the city
of Jerusalem surrendered to Salahuddin’s army.

Salahuddin’s success prompted Christian leaders in Europe to send a new wave

of Crusaders to the Holy Land. Among them were many famous knights and
nobles, including King Richard I of England. Salahuddin’s armies fought
courageously against the Crusaders. The Crusaders, in turn, saw Salahuddin as
an honorable and skillful leader.

After another failed attempt by three kings of Europe to recapture

Jerusalem between 1189 and 1192, Salahuddin returned home to Damascus,
Syria. He died there on March 4, 1193, possessing only one piece of gold and
40 pieces of silver, having given away the rest of his wealth to the poor,
may Allah have mercy upon him and forgive him. His family, known as the
Ayyoubid dynasty, ruled over Egypt, Syria, and other lands until the mid-
1200s.

The Separation Barrier

Palestinians who want to pray in Masjid Al-Aqsa

are being prevented from entering. Many
Palestinians are forced to live behind a huge wall
built by the Zionist state. When they want to move
from place to place they must seek permission at
army check points. This makes it impossible for
them to go to Jerusalem or even to live freely in
their own land.

Today, the situation for Palestinians is very

difficult. We must remember them in our du‟aas.
