THE INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE THREE
SECTORS

Primary Sector Secondary Sector Tertiary Sector

SUSTAINABLE USE OF RESOURCES IN THE
THREE SECTORS
 The resources that businesses use during production
are non-renewable and renewable.
 Examples of non-renewable are water, coal and oil. Once
we have used up all these, we cannot produce more. Oil
is used to make petrol and diesel.
 Examples of renewable resources are wood, agricultural
products. These resources can be replaced.
 Primary sector needs resources to exist, Secondary
sector don’t get any resources from primary sector, they
cannot manufacture any goods. If no goods are
manufactured, the Tertiary sector will cease to exist.
ROLE OF THE THREE SECTORS IN THE ECONOMY

 In poorer countries, most of the money comes

from the primary sector.
 In richer countries, most of the money comes from
the tertiary sector.
 In South Africa, Agriculture, in the primary sector
contributes 2% to the country’s GDP.
 Car manufacturing in the Secondary sector
contributes 6% to the country’s GDP.
 Tourism in the Tertiary sector contributes 7,9% to
the country’s GDP.
TYPES OF SKILLS REQUIRED IN EACH SECTOR

 Skilled : does require a high level of skill

thorough training.
 Semi–skilled: does require some skill and
training.
 Unskilled : does not require a high level of skills
and often involves physical labour.
