4.14 A rectangular gate is installed in a ver cal wall of a reservoir, as shown in Fig. 4.26. Compute the
magnitude of the resultant force on the gate and the loca on of the center of pressure. Also compute
the force on each of the two latches shown.
4.17 If the wall in Fig. 4.29 is 4 m long, calculate the total force on the wall due to the oil pressure. Also
determine the loca on of the center of pressure and show the resultant force on the wall.
4.23 and 4.28 For each of the cases shown in the figures, compute the magnitude of the resultant force
on the indicated area and the loca on of the center of pressure. Show the resultant force on the area and
clearly dimension its loca on.

4.47 and 4.50 For each problem, one curved surface is shown restraining a body of sta c fluid. Compute
the magnitude of the horizontal component of the force and compute the ver cal component of the force
exerted by the fluid on that surface. Then compute the magnitude of the resultant force and its direc on.
Show the resultant force ac ng on the curved surface. In each case the surface of interest is a por on of
a cylinder with the length of the surface given in the problem statement.
Dam 1. A dam is triangular in cross-sec on with the upstream face ver cal. The dam is 12 m high and 9 m
wide at the base. Water is flushed at the top. The dam weighs 24 kN/m and the coefficient of fric on
between the base and the founda on is 0.7. Neglect hydrosta c upli . Determine the factor of safety
against sliding and overturning

5.12 Figure 5.20 shows a cube floa ng in a fluid. Derive an expression rela ng the submerged depth X, the
specific weight of the cube, and the specific weight of the fluid.
5.16 A buoy is to support a cone-shaped instrument package, as shown in Fig. 5.22. The buoy is made from
a uniform material having a specific weight of 8.00 lb/ 3 . At least 1.50 of the buoy must be above the
surface of the seawater for safety and visibility. Calculate the maximum allowable weight of the instrument
package.

5.39 A cylindrical block of wood is 5.00 m in diameter and 3.00 m long and has a specific weight of 4.00
kN/m3 . Will it float in a stable manner in water with its axis ver cal?
