Objective(1-2):
Calculating an unknown Resistance by charging the Capacitors. When it
is charged, we discharge it through the unknown Resistance. Through
several calculations, we can calculate the value of the unknown
resistance.

Equipment Required (1-2):

 Power Supply
 Board
 Resistosr
 Capacitors
 Wier
 Key
 Voltmeter

Theory (1-2) :
In loss of charge method unknown resistance is connected in parallel
with capacitor and electrostatic voltmeter. The capacitor is initially
charged to some suitable voltage by means of a battery of voltage V and
then allowed to discharge through the resistance. The terminal voltage
is observed during discharge and it is given by

V=v exp (-t/CR) ……………………………………………. Equation (1.1)

Figure (1-1) Figure (1-2)
From above equation (1.1) it follows that if V, v, C and t are known the
value of R can be computed. If the Resistance R is very large the time for
an appreciable fall in Voltage is very large and thus this process mayn
become time consuming. Also the Voltage-time curve will thus be very
flat and unless great care is taken in measuring Voltages at the
beginning and at the end of time t, a serious error may be made in the
ratio V/v causing the considerable corresponding error in the measured
value of R. more accurate results may be obtained by change in the
Voltage V-v directly and calling this change as e, the expression for R
becomes:

Figure (1-3) loss of charge circuit

Discussion And Solution (1.2):

V0 was measured, then we removed the wires every 30 seconds, we

took the value of v for a period of 900 seconds, then we found the value
of v0/v and the value of Ln(v0/v) and it was multiplied by the
Capacitors, then through the Equation Rx we found its value.

Questions (1-2):
1-Why this method is called as loss of charge method ?
 Because the capacitor discharges its charge with the resistor.

2- What errors occur while performing this practical?

Possible errors are :
 inaccuracy in calculations
 low sensitivity of the voltmeter
 wrong connection
 Error due to Leakage and Absorption
 Error due to Time of Application of Voltage
 Conclusion (1-2):
We have learnt Loss of Charge Method for Measurement of
High Resistance The "loss of charge" method is a technique used to
measure the resistance of a resistor or any other electrical component.
It involves discharging a capacitor through the component being tested
and measuring the time it takes for the voltage across the capacitor to
drop to a certain level. From this measurement, the resistance of the
component can be calculated.
