Day 2: Choose a Skill

JUMP TO ACTION STEPS & TEMPLATES

It’s DAY 2.

WOOHOO!

Which means you've now found a market to pursue and you're now ready for the next
step.

(If you missed DAYS 1 & 1.5, make sure to complete them.)

And next up on the list is choosing the skill or service you want to serve your
chosen market with.

But before anything else, let me just remind you:

You don't need to be an expert.

You don't have to have that million dollar skill.

Nor do you need to have a portfolio.

Everyone and I mean everyone, no exceptions, has a service that they can offer.

And when they know how to price it, package it, and have a step by step process for
getting clients…

I believe that they can scale their businesses to s ix figures a month and beyond.

Now, there’s another process to this inside the Tribe which we’ll not go into details
since it may take you more than a couple of days…

But for now, I just want you to CHOOSE.

Now here are some brainstorming questions to help you come up with the service or
skill to focus on…

QUESTION 1: Is it something you’re already good at?

What is your zone of genius?

You might not realize this, but I can almost guarantee that things which may come easy
for you are nightmares for other people.

For example, I have this acquaintance from a group who’s a master with numbers and
even has a degree in accountancy.

So she quickly set up her profile network, began looking for jobs and in less than a
week, landed her very first client.

She would have picked any skill really.

But making use of the skills she already has, she was able to get a head start.

QUESTION 2: Is it something you can be excited about?

Passion is overrated.

And for some people, passion takes a lot of time to find out and realize.

So instead of finding your passion, just look for a skill or service you’d never get bored
of learning.

While being good at what you do is an asset…

Being able to stay excited with what you do is important.

And in the game of freelancing…

Those who win the game are those who stay in the game until they win the game.

QUESTION 3: Is it something that’s already being offered out there?

What I mean is…

Is this something your market is already paying for?

Because if you see other people offering service and you find yourself thinking "hmmm,
I can do that too…"

Then you can pretty much go for it.

The fact that other people are getting paid to do it, means you no longer have to test if
it’s a skill worth paying for.

It's a pre-validated idea.

Now if you have no idea what skills or services are out there, you can simply click this
link.

It's an inventory of proven skills (over 900+) that have been paid one time or another
by a client.

(Make sure to scroll down since there’s a ton)

QUESTION 4: Is it a skill your market needs?

Let me ask you…

Would you pay for a service (no matter how cheap) if it doesn't help you solve your
problem?

It's like a babysitter offering you her services for a measly $1/hr when you don't have a
baby.

You won't take it even at a bargain.

So why do most freelancers do the exact opposite?

© 2019 | The Freelance Movement

You see, no matter how good you are with the service you provide, if it doesn't solve
your market's problem…

You’d always have a hard time marketing your services.

So pick a huge problem your market has and ask yourself…

Which service or skill can solve that problem?

Whatever answer you come up with, you can choose that as a skill or service to offer
and you’re good to go!

Now, if you’re reading this and you feel like asking…

"Paano kung newbie pa lang po ako?"

"Call center work lang po ang alam ko..."

In my honest opinion and the way it has been for Tribe members…

Skills are best learned on the job.

Naaalala ko pa nung unang beses akong maging tatay…

I had to learn everything on the job since wala namang kasamang manuals ang baby
kapag lumabas. (Dapat talaga meron. lol!)

So bakit ka kakabahan pagdating sa freelancing when a human life is much more

important than a client project?

Doesn’t make sense, di ba?

Take being a "social media marketer" for example…

You can watch videos after videos of social media strategies until you feel na expert ka
na.

But by the time na matapos ka, meron na namang bagong mga strategies.

So aral ka ulit.

A year has passed and you realize na you haven’t done a single thing except mag-aral.

*sigh*

Now, compare that to studying WHILE doing it for a client.

Walang sayang na oras because you’re forced to study only on things your client needs
to get results.

The way you learn is deliberate and intentional.

Because no matter how much you study, iba pa rin ang feeling kapag ginagawa mo na
para sa client.

Sabi nga nila…

Experience is still the best teacher.

Best part?

You get to practice while being paid. :-)

In fact, let me show you how powerful "LEARNING WHILE DOING" actually is from
Michael, one of our Tribe members…

“Just wanted to help prove the power of the JTL proposal

Just landed my dream deal this morning. I have zero knowledge of YouTube Ads
but the proposal helped to seal the deal.

In his words, "I can tell you spent a great amount of time preparing the proposal, and I
appreciate that. Judging by the way it looks, you left me no other choice but to say
YES!"

I worked on the proposal most of the day yesterday. And I felt very proud upon hearing
those words.

(I was actually smiling on the phone.)

...My tribemates said my pricing is cheap, but for me it's genuinely enough for me that I
may be able to prove to myself that I am capable of bringing success to a campaign.

(dun pa lang panalo na ko eh)

With that, I will have the confidence I need to take on more premium clients and
remove the self doubt.

(parang mas importante yun - nabuksan na Pandora's box)

Anyways, he didn't even bothered with the pricing and made me a much better deal.

Here's a link to the proposal if you're interested...

(Tribe members: the exact proposal link is inside the Tribe)

Thank you sa mga tumulong. lam niyo na kung sino sino kayo…”

No experience.

No credentials.

No portfolio.

In short, he was a complete Youtube Marketing newbie exactly a year ago (January of
2019).

And only a month later (February 2019), he posted this…

The advice he gave isn’t the focus here.

What I’d like you to pay attention to is the date he posted this advice and the results he
generated for his client.

See what one short month makes when you're learning by doing?

Like I’ve mentioned tons of times before…

A lot can happen in 30 days if only we’d stop thinking and start doing.

Today?

He’s now earning passively through client commissions and gets paid $9,500 doing
YouTube Ads for less than 2 hours a day on a really good month.

Not bad for offering a skill he doesn’t have yet, doesn’t it? ;-)

I guess what I’m trying to say is…

No one starts at the top.

All of us started not knowing what to do — including me.

The only difference?

While we had to figure shit out on our own…

You now have over 1,000 other members you can ask for help from.

NOTE: Do not proceed with this task until you’ve completed DAYS 1 and 1.5.

Action Steps:
STEP 1: Slowly read the entire lesson from beginning to end at least THREE (3) times.
(And no, I’m not kidding.)

STEP 2: Using the questions above, brainstorm a skill or service you’d like to offer.

FAQs
Question: Pano kung di pa ko marunong?

Answer: T
hat’s a valid concern. And this concern has gotten many freelancers stuck in
a loop and has killed so many freelancing dreams before they even got started. The
truth?

EVERYTHING IS LEARNABLE.

In fact, you can pick any skill or service now and it won’t matter much kung alam mo
siya gawin o hinde. The only factor you should be taking into consideration is…

"Willing mo ba siyang matutunan?"

Because that’s literally all you need. Think about it...

Every second, someone gets hired for a position they barely know anything about until
they get there.

Remember your first ever job? You hardly know what your duties are yet you go in
there, first day at work, trying forcing yourself to learn everything on the fly.

Got promoted? You don't have a 100% grasp of your new responsibilities yet you try
and look the part anyway as if you really know what you're doing (lol!)

Yet for some reason, it seems like a foreign concept when applied to freelancing.

Bakit? Because we (especially the ones starting out) think we have to be 100% ready
and prepared before we even make a single move.

Yet all our life we have been doing things na wala naman talaga tayong alam —
natutunan na lang.

Question: Pero pano kung mag fail and di ko ma-meet expectations ni client?

Answer: G
ood question. You can do these two ways.

You either structure a payment term where the bulk of your fees rely heavily on the
result generated.

For example…

$100 only + 10% commission for every sale

This way, you don’t feel guilty for being a newbie and you share both risks and
rewards, thus, the client feels you’d always try your best.

Or…

You can simply refund. Yep. Refund. Just give them back the money they paid. That’s
it.

Simple, noh?

"Pero sayang naman ung pagod ko kung irerefund ko lang!"

While that may be true… Sa tingin mo, saan mas sayang ung pagod mo…

Kaka-aral hanggang mag feeling expert na wala namang bayad?

Or taking a chance on getting a client and making money, habang nag-aaral?

Question: Anong skills po ung premium?

Answer: W
atch this video where I talked about choosing a “profitable” skill.
