Expressions with “do,” “have,” and “make”
do the dishes (verb phrase) – to clean dirty plates, bowls, etc. after cooking or eating
have something to drink (verb phrase) – to put liquid into your mouth and swallow it
have something to eat (verb phrase) – to put food into your mouth and swallow it
have free time (verb phrase) – to have time when you do not have to work, study, etc. and can do what
you want
“She has some free time, so she's reading and listening to music."
have a party (verb phrase) – to host a social event where a group of people meet to talk, eat, drink,
dance, etc., often to celebrate a special occasion
make the bed (verb phrase) – to make the sheets and covers on a bed neat and tidy

Naming work and study items
calendar (noun) – something that shows all the days, weeks, and months of the year
document (noun) – a paper with information on it, or a computer file with text
files (noun) – texts, pictures, computer programs, or other information that you keep on a computer
headphones (noun) – something you wear over your ears so you can listen to music
mouse (noun) – a small piece of equipment that you use with your hand to control your computer
notes (noun) – words that you write down to help you remember something
outlet (noun) – a place where you connect electrical equipment to give it electricity
Wi-Fi (noun) – a system for connecting electronic equipment, such as computers and cell phones, to the
internet
“I saw that the café had a Wi-Fi sign, so I was able to connect to the internet."

Sports
athlete (noun) – a person who is very good at sports, especially a person who enters sports
competitions

Exercise and movement
jump (verb) – to push yourself off the ground using your legs
lie down (phrasal verb) – to move into a position in which your body is flat, usually to sleep or rest
push (verb) – to move something or someone by pressing them with your hands or body
sit down (phrasal verb) – to move your body to rest on a seat or on the ground
stretch (verb) – to make your body or part of your body straighter and longer
throw (verb) – to make something move through the air by pushing it out of your hand

what he wants."
jewelry (noun) – objects such as earrings, necklaces and rings that you wear to decorate your body

perfume (noun) – a liquid with a strong, pleasant smell that you put on your skin
phone charger (noun) – a device for recharging a phone battery (filling it with electricity)

Describing opinions and feelings
angry (adjective) – the feeling you get when something wrong or bad happens; the feeling when you
want to shout at someone because they did something bad

dangerous (adjective) – something or someone that can cause harm, death, or problems
proud (adjective) – feeling happy and pleased because you or someone else has done something good

be born (verb phrase) – when a person or animal leaves their mother's body
become a grandparent (verb phrase) – what you start to be when your son or daughter has a child
buy a car (verb phrase) – to pay money for a car so the car is yours

“My husband and I got married two years ago. All our friends and family were there to see us become

Using money
borrow (verb) – to use something that belongs to someone else and give it back later
lend (verb) – to give something to someone for a short time, which they later give back to you
pay back (phrasal verb) – to return money that you borrowed from someone

return (verb) – to take or send something you bought back to the store
save (verb) – to keep something, usually money, for use in the future
“I'm saving money to buy a new car. I need about $200 more."
sell (verb) – to give something to someone who gives you money for it
shop online (verb phrase) – to buy things on the internet and not go into a store

Naming food
avocado (noun) – a tropical fruit with thick, dark green skin, a large, round seed, and soft, pale green
flesh that can be eaten
burger (noun) – meat or other food made into a round, flat shape, fried and usually eaten on bread
chili pepper or chili (noun) – any of several types of red pepper (a type of vegetable) that are used to
make foods spicy
corn (noun) – a tall plant grown in many parts of the world for its yellow seeds, which are eaten as food
cereal (noun) – a food that is made from grain and usually eaten with milk, especially in the morning
jam (noun) – a sweet food made from fruit that you put on bread
lettuce (noun) – a plant with green leaves which is eaten with salads
noodles (noun) – thin pieces of pasta (food made from flour, eggs, and water), often used in Asian

onion (noun) – a vegetable with a strong smell and flavor, made up of several layers, usually brown or

strawberry (noun) – a small, juicy, red fruit that has small seeds on its surface

yogurt (noun) – a slightly sour, thick liquid made from milk with bacteria added to it, sometimes eaten

pasta (noun) – a food made of flour, water, and sometimes egg, that comes in many different shapes
pepper (noun) – a gray or white powder produced by crushing dry peppercorns, used to give a spicy, hot

salmon (noun) – a medium-sized fish that lives in the sea or rivers and swims up rivers to produce its
eggs. Its pink flesh is eaten as a food.
salt (noun) – a common white substance found in sea water and in the ground, used especially to add
flavor to food or to preserve it

sour (adjective) – having a strong and sometimes unpleasant taste or smell, like a lemon; not sweet

airplane (noun) – a vehicle that flies and has an engine and wings

suitcase (noun) – a rectangular case with a handle that you use for carrying clothes when you travel

tour bus (noun) – a vehicle on which tourists travel around a place, area, or country

tour guide (noun) – a person whose job is to show visitors a place or area

tourist (noun) – a person who visits a place for fun and does not live there

Using transportation
catch the bus/train (verb phrase) – to arrive on time to take a bus or train
“We were late, but we arrived just in time to catch the bus."
change buses/trains (verb phrase) – to get off one bus or train and to get onto another bus or train to
complete your trip
“I take two trains to work. I take a train from my town into the city, and then change trains at the main
station to go to my office."
drop (someone) off (phrasal verb) – to take a person where they want to go and then leave
get into a taxi/the car (phrasal verb) – to get into a taxi or car to start your trip
get off the bus/train (phrasal verb) – to step off a bus or train at the end of your trip

get on the bus/train (phrasal verb) – to board a bus or train to start your trip

Naming accessories
belt (noun) – a long thin piece of leather, cloth, or plastic that you wear around your waist
bracelet (noun) – a piece of jewelry that you wear around your wrist
gloves (noun) – a piece of clothing that covers your fingers and hand
necklace (noun) – a piece of jewelry that you wear around your neck
scarf (noun) – a piece of cloth that you wear around your neck, head, or shoulders to keep warm or for
decoration
socks (noun) – what you wear on your feet inside your shoes
sunglasses (noun) – dark glasses that you wear to protect your eyes from the sun
tie (noun) – a long, thin piece of cloth that you wear under a shirt collar and tie in front (more common
in men's clothing)

or to sell goods or services
engineer (noun) – someone who designs, builds, or repairs machines, engines, roads, bridges, etc.
IT specialist (noun) – someone who helps to fix problems that people have with their computers
lawyer (noun) – someone who understands the law and helps people with legal problems
mechanic (noun) – someone who fixes vehicles, like cars and trucks, and other machines
nurse (noun) – someone who cares for sick and injured people

paramedic (noun) – someone who helps hurt or sick people, especially in an emergency, but who is not
a doctor or a nurse
physical therapist (noun) – someone who helps people to use parts of their body better after an illness

police officer (noun) – someone who is a member of the police and protects people and places against
crime

receptionist (noun) – a person who welcomes and helps visitors and answers the phone in a place such
as a hotel, office, or hospital

catch a cold (verb) – to get a common illness that makes you sneeze and cough
cut your finger (verb) – to injure your finger on a sharp object that makes it bleed
“John isn't careful when he uses a knife, so he often cuts his finger."
have a fever (verb) – to have a high body temperature because you are sick
have a sore throat (verb) – to have a condition in which your throat is red and feels painful, especially
when you swallow
“He ate too much pizza for lunch, and now he has a stomachache."
have the flu (verb) – to have an illness similar to a very bad cold that makes you feel hot and weak
“I have the flu, so I'm not going to work today. I have a fever and a headache."
hurt your back (verb) – to injure your back so it causes you pain
twist your ankle (verb) – to fall and turn on your ankle so it causes you pain
block (verb) – on social media, to stop someone from being able to send you messages or read what you

bookmark (verb) – to save the address of a website on your computer so you can find it again easily
download (verb) – to copy or move programs, music, or other information to a device, usually over the

follow (verb) – when you follow someone, you choose to see everything that person posts on a social
media website

go viral (verb) – to become popular very quickly through communication from one person to another,
especially on the internet
“I made a video and posted it online. It went viral. Lots of people watched it and liked it."
like (verb) – to show you enjoy something on social media by clicking on a special icon
“I read my friends' posts on social media. I press the ‘like’ button if I think they are good."
log in (phrasal verb) – to connect to a computer system by putting in a password of letters and numbers
search for (verb) – to look for something, such as information on the internet
share (verb) – to send something, for example documents or photos, from your device to another
person's device
“I share photos with my friends through email and through social media."
upload (verb) – to copy or move programs, music, or other information from one device to another
device or to the internet
add someone as a friend (verb phrase) – to put someone on your friend list on a social media site
change your password (verb phrase) – to make a new combination of letters or numbers to access a
website or app
“Some websites make you change your password every couple of months."
check your messages (verb phrase) – to look at your phone and see if you have any new messages
click on a link (verb phrase) – to tap a button on a device that takes you to a new web page

make a video (verb phrase) – to produce a recording with visuals and, usually, sounds

message (someone) / send (someone) a message (verb phrase) – to send someone a short piece of
information online
open a social media account (verb phrase) – to create an account online that allows you to
communicate and share information

drought (noun) – a long period when there is no rain and people do not have enough water
flood (noun) – when a place becomes covered in water because of too much rain

humid (adjective) – with very small drops of water in the air; a little wet
“The hurricane came quickly, and it was so windy some people lost their houses."
“It is very snowy here in winter. The snow can make it difficult to drive."
“I love the weather here. It's so sunny. The sun is always shining."
thunder (noun) – the loud noise in the sky that you hear during a storm
“There was a storm last night. The thunder was very loud.”
cave (noun) – a large hole in the side of a cliff, mountain, or under the ground
“There is a cave in the side of a mountain. It looks very dark and a bit scary."
cliff (noun) – a high area of rock with a steep side, often next to the ocean
“I like to walk along the top of the cliffs and look down at the ocean."
“I live near the coast, so I go for a walk along the beach every day."
fountain (noun) – a structure that forces water up into the air as a decoration
“There is a fountain in the park. It is very beautiful. Water comes out of the top and the sides."
“The glacier is getting bigger because the ice is slowly moving down the mountain."
Some rocks can be very big and heavy, and difficult to move."
“You can see lots of skyscrapers in big cities. They are very tall. Many big companies have offices inside."
stadium (noun) – a large open area with seats around it, used for playing and watching sports
statue (noun) – an object made of hard material, such as stone or metal, that looks like a person or
animal
