INVESTIGATING CHORDS OF THE CIRCLE

INTRODUCTION

A circle is a round-shape figure that has no corners or edges. It circle is a geometric shape that is defined
as a set of points the are equidistant from a contract point.

The number of triangles that can be formed within a circle by connecting 7 distinct points on it's
circumference depends on the arrangement and position on these points. Placing the points regularly on
the circle may result in special instances that do not fully represent the data range.

MATHEMATICS INVESTIGATIONS

Emphasis is on investigating the maximum number of chords that can be constructed given a regular
placed number of points on the circle.

MATH USED IN THE INVESTIGATION

1. Circle

2. Number of chords and number of triangle

3. Direct proof and proof of contradiction.

PROBLEM 1

In one circle, how many chords formed in 7 points?

CONJECTURE

There will be an increase in the number of chords if you add one or more points.

VERIFICATION

1 point = no chords

2 points= 1 chord

3 points= 2 chords
4 points= 6 chords

5 points= 9 chords

6 points= 15 chords

7 points= 21 chords

PROOF

Hypothesis:The number of chords in a circle with n points can be calculated using the formula C(n) = n(n-
1)/2.

Conclusion: The verification results confirm that the formula C(n) = n(n-1)/2 accurately calculates the
number of chords in a circle with n points.

EXTENSION

The investigators would like to recommend the following topics for future investigation.

1. Consider extending the investigation to circles with a different number of points and compare the
results.

2. Explore the use of algebraic equations to describe the chords in terms of the coordinates of the points
on the circle.
