This summer I had the opportunity to attend the Wharton School of Business at the

University of Pennsylvania for the Essentials of Finance course. This was a two week course that

delved deep into economic fundamentals, company valuation, ESG analysis, and more.

The program began with a comprehensive exploration of economic basics providing a

solid foundation to understanding the intricacies of global financial systems and markets. We

participated in guest lectures and group discussions, which contributed to my understanding on

the factors influencing global financial markets. The emphasis on real-world applications

fostered a practical understanding of economic principles, enabling me to connect my prior

theoretical knowledge with the complexities of the ever-evolving financial landscape.

In the rapidly evolving financial landscape, Environmental, Social, and Governance

(ESG) factors have become increasingly important in financial analysis. In the program we had

the opportunity to analyze a company for its ESG factors in groups and compile information

which we would present at the conclusion of the program. My group focused on JP Morgan and

Chase and analyzed their various ESG techniques and how those have impacted their company.

From this experience, ESG became something I want to pursue further in the future.

Another highlight of the program was the in-depth exploration of company valuation

methodologies. From the dividend discount model to the discounted cash flor analysis, the

course equipped me with a diverse array of tools to assess the true worth of a company.

Participating in practical case study and hands-on exercises allowed me to apply these calculator

techniques, honing my skills in evaluating investment opportunities and making informed

financial decisions. Along with the ESG presentation, in our groups we made a final presentation

valuing the same company. So, my group valued JP Morgan and Chase and analyzed all the

factors contributing to their true value. From here we made a decision whether to buy, sell, or

hold the stock. This experience gave me a glimpse into the intricacies of financial

decision-making at the highest level.

Beyond the academic content, this program put me in a dynamic and collaborative

learning environment. Just two weeks prior to the final presentation, my group didn’t even know

eachothers names. By the end we were able to get to know each other and work together so well

that we were presented with the best teamwork award. Interacting with peers from diverse

backgrounds, provided a new perspective on financial challenges and opportunities and taught

me the importance of making robust professional and peer-to-peer connections.

Looking back, the Wharton Essentials of Finance program was a valuable experience

shaping my educational journey. The course equipped me with both the skills and knowledge

required for a successful finance career and an appreciation for the broader implications of the

financial landscape as it pertains to society as a whole.
