Inductive & Deductive Reasoning

Based on my understanding, inductive reasoning has specific statements to general conclusion
where statements are logically true however it may or not be realistically true. On the other
hand, deductive reasoning has general arguments to specific conclusions. But unlike inductive,
this deductive is logically and always realistically true.

2. Inductive Reasoning
- Is the process of reaching a general conclusion by examining specific observations
- premise and premise look for patterns = general conclusions
- true premise = probable conclusion
- specific to general
- In-ductive (as in the word IN-crease) is something that starts at something specific/small to
explain something bigger/general (it increases)
● Ex: Yesterday morning, Ara went jogging. This morning, she jogged again. Therefore,
Ara will probably jog tomorrow morning.
● The teacher used google classroom in the last few classes. Therefore, the teacher will
use google classroom tomorrow.
● My father has a black hair. My brother has a black hair. Therefore, everyone I am related
to has black hair.
● The Game of Thrones TV series was a worldwide success. Therefore, any sequel for the
series will probably be successful.

3. Deductive Reasoning
- The process of reaching a conclusion by applying general ideas called “premises”
- laws, recognized rules, theories = specific conclusion
- true premise = true conclusion
- De-ductive (as in the word DE-crease) is something that starts at something general/big to
explain something specific/small (it decreases)
● Ex: Marvel Comics characters are fictional. Iron Man is a Marvel Comics character.
Therefore, Iron Man is a fictional character.
● Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Orange is a citrus fruit. Therefore, an orange is rich in
vitamin C. Therefore, an orange is rich in vitamin C.
● All even numbers are divisible by 2, 22 is even. Therefore, 22 is divisible by 2
● All licensed drivers are 17 years old and above. Justin has a driver’s license. Therefore,
Marcus is at least 17 years old.
● All spiders have eight legs. Black widows are spiders. Thus, black widows have eight
legs.
4. How can you apply inductive
● Since inductive is specific to general, I have to apply it in my life probably about school
matters, maybe when I’m doing research and thinking about the specific topic that we’re
assigned by our professor, I have to observe and gather data to make general
conclusions so that I can understand the topic better and share it with members with
various examples of my general conclusion about the matter of topic.
5. How can you apply deductive in life
● While this deductive has rules, evidence and theories before we consider it as a specific
true conclusion. I will apply it by reflecting about the misunderstanding in life that If we
want to have a casual and peaceful relationship with someone or somebody, we do not
need to overthink everything they do and make malice about the actions they do. I have
to think and understand that what that someone does is only “that”, no other conclusions
or reasons. Because if you make it a big deal, then that will be in a broader sense. In the
end, you will only hurt yourself if you make the actions of someone a big deal or thinking
that it has intentions. Therefore, we don’t need to make a more general conclusion on
the specific actions they do, what they do is only no other than that, no more, their
actions are only specific and not deep. We just have to adapt to a specific way of
thinking and avoid generalizing other’s intentions.
