“Alone”
by EDGAR ALLAN POE

From childhood’s hour I have not been

As others were—I have not seen
As others saw—I could not bring
My passions from a common spring—
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow—I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone—
And all I lov’d—I lov’d alone—
Then—in my childhood—in the dawn
Of a most stormy life—was drawn
From ev’ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still—
From the torrent, or the fountain—
From the red cliff of the mountain—
From the sun that ’round me roll’d
In its autumn tint of gold—
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass’d me flying by—
From the thunder, and the storm—
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view—

Alone

In Edgar Allan Poe’s Alone, it reflects off of ones dark and saddening life. Its about the loneliness
one encounters and the childhood troubles they may have had. Edgar describes all the emotions felt and
the meaning behind the loneliness with this poem and enhances it with the variety of poetic devices in the
poem itself. Perception of life is strongly changed by the experiences throughout your childhood and
lifetime. “From childhood’s hour I have not been as others were” (1-2), a strong use of simile using the
word “as” to compare one’s childhood and life experiences and how it differentiated from others normal
childhood. “And all I lov’d—I lov’d alone” (8) there is a repetition of Consonant sounds to represent the
loving was all given by himself and he received nothing, and it shows the impact of loneliness. “Of a most
stormy life—was drawn” (10) this shows how a stormy cloud was a symbol for Edgars life, how all of his
life his evil and good have been enclosed and how he can even figure himself out and neither can anyone
help him. In the poem there is a lot of imagery to explain Edgar’s emotions and how he views the world
differently compared to others “From the red cliff of the mountain— From the sun that ’round me roll’d”
(14-15) “From the thunder, and the storm— And the cloud that took the form” (19-20). Using this imagery,
he describes how he sees the sky full of clouds that represent demons. “(When the rest of Heaven was
blue)” (21) a form of personification is showed when he says the heaven itself is blue, blue meaning sad and
it shows the negative thoughts that he carries due to being alone.
