 Introduction to TCP/IP Protocol Suite

• The layers in the TCP/IP protocol suite do not exactly match those
in the OSI model.
• The original TCP/IP protocol suite was defined as having four
layers: host-to-network, internet, transport, and application.
• However, when TCP/IP is compared to OSI, so the TCP/IP protocol
suite is made of five layers: physical, data link, network, transport,
and application.

 Practice Questions
1) Design a layered architecture for ‘Hands Free’ application for attending to calls in
a car while driving.
2) Rohini wants to send an email to her friend Sabhana. Email reaches Sabhana in a
layered approach. Discuss in detail the functionalities of each layer involved.
3) Suppose, if there is a change in the service provided by one layer of OSI; For
e.g., layer 3, will that affect layer 4 and layer 2? Justify your answer.
4) Mr. Titan is chatting with his friend Mr. Rado over the Internet. Use your
networking skill and specify how the messages from Titan reach Rado. Discuss
the entire process undergoes through different layers before it reaches Rado over
Internet with neat sketch.
