Question
Have you ever been to a farm?
Have you seen a tractor?
Now I’m going to show you pictures and you will evaluate
the possible emergencies that one may experience in the
farm.
How to avoid these to happen?
In this lesson you will learn how to apply appropriate
safety measures while working in the farm
Abstraction
(15min) Unlocking of words;
Hazard- it is the potential for harm or adverse effect on an
employee's health. Anything which may cause injury or ill
to anyone at or near a workplace is a hazard.
Next is
Risk-it is the likelihood that a hazard will cause injury or ill
health to anyone at or near a workplace. The level of risk
increases with the severity of the hazard and the duration
and frequency of exposure.
lastly is

Exposure – it occurs when a person comes into contact

with a hazard.

Physical Hazards –it includes floors, stairs, work platforms,

steps, ladders, fire, falling objects, slippery surfaces,
manual handling (lifting, pushing, pulling),excessive loud
and prolonged noise, vibration, heat and cold, radiation,
poor lighting, ventilation, and air quality.

Second is Mechanical and/or electrical hazards - these

includes electricity, machinery, equipment, pressure
vessels, dangerous goods, forklifts, cranes and hoists.

Next is Chemical hazard - It includes chemical substances

such as acids or poisons and those that could lead to fire
or explosions, like pesticides, herbicides, cleaning agents,
dusts, and fumes from various processes such as welding.

And we have Biological hazards – this includes bacteria,

viruses, molds, mildew, insects, vermin and animals.

lastly is Psychosocial environment- this refers to a work

place stressor arising from a variety of sources.

Example, work-related stress, bullying and harassment,

lone and remote place, violence in the workplace,
fatigue, alcohol and drug use.

In farm emergency procedures regarding safety working

environment, we have to identify first the potential
emergencies that may occur on a crop production farm.
after identifying the potentials emergencies
we have to provide emergency facility appropriate for the
sorts of emergencies that might occur on the farm and we
must make sure that the correct equipment is available to
contain and handle any chemical or other dangerous
materials spills that might happen, and to help minimize
the risk of personal injury or property damage in the event
of an emergency.
Another thing is instruct everyone working on the farm in
the emergency response procedures.
Everyone should know the locations of fire alarms,
fire extinguishers, and first aid kits;
how and where to contact emergency services;
and where to safely assemble in the event of an
emergency.
In using mechanical like land preparation using tractor, any
equipment victims fall off or are thrown from the tractor.
Run over by either the tractor or an implement being towed, or
both.
So, in order to prevent this accident to happen you have to
post decals, signboards and warning devices for safety
reminders: Example
Tractors are not passenger vehicles
 Use seat belts when driving tractors
 ROPS will protect the operator from serious injuries.

Now, what are possible causes of run-over accidents

 Sudden stops

 Driving over holes, stumps and debris, or a sharp turn

 Lack of Training and Poor Communication
 Allow riders on tractors
To avoid accidents;
 Discuss with the members and farm workers on the potential
risks of riding tractor
 hire trained drivers
Proper machine guarding and doing maintenance
according to manufacturer’s recommendation.
Alright, Any question?

This time we are going discuss how to reduce risk of

hazards from chemicals,
First you have to
 wear proper clothing use personal protective
equipment
Make sure to wear respiratory equipment when using
chemicals,
 it must be safety stored and cupboards are locked
 Always follow the procedure of manufacturer’s
manual.
In order to be safe in using chemicals you must
consider if chemical substance is needed,
 eliminate hazardous substances or if it’s not possible
substitute it with less hazardous one,
 Safe work practices and
 keep records in farm chemicals
 always wash your hands every after using the chemical

 Avoid spraying in a strong wind and the spray drifting

over a dam or the farmhouse.
Avoid eating, drinking and smoking while using chemicals
 Avoid washing spray equipment and the water running
into open drains, collecting in puddles, or running into
stockyards or dams.
 Don’t put the containers or chemicals left lying around.
or empty containers lying in a heap.

Generalization:
Many hazards are present on the farm. If the farmers are

not aware of these hazards these may cause injury to their

body or may cause diseases and even death.
Farmers should always apply appropriate safety measures
while working on the farm
Agricultural crop production deals with a lot of activities to
be done in different workplaces. While performing these
activities we expose ourselves to a lot of risk.
So, in order to be safe in working in the farm we must
keep in mind the safety measures to avoid the
occurrence emergencies.

Now prepare your pen and ¼ sheet of paper for a short

quiz.

Assessment
(5min) Instruction. Put a smiling face, if the statement is correct
and sad face if the statement is incorrect. Fill in the space
provided before the number. Answer directly.
Write it in a ¼ sheet of paper. (2pts)

________1. Tractors are passenger vehicles.

________2. Use PPE like respirators when spraying
chemicals.
________3. Risk is anything that cause injury or ill to
anyone.
________4. Exposure occurs when a person comes into
contact with a hazard.
________5. The level of risk increases with the severity of
the hazard and the duration and frequency of exposure.
