Procedure
Language Focus
Give each student a copy of the worksheet.
Past necessity
'I needed to...' Tell the students to imagine that they went to each place mentioned
on the worksheet and that the worksheet shows the items they
'I didn't need to...' took and didn't take to each place.
'I needn't have...' The students think about whether they needed to take each item
with them or not and write a sentence using one of the following
structures:
Aim
To practice expressing I needed to take...
past necessity by talking I didn't need to take... + because/as/since...
about the need for I needn't have taken...
certain items in different
situations. Demonstrate the activity using the first situation on the worksheet
and draw the students' attention to the different meanings of the
structures.
Preparation
I needed to take a pen because I often write in my book.
Make one copy of the (I took or didn’t take it, and it was necessary)
worksheet for each
student. I didn't need to take a magazine as I don't have time to read.
(I didn't take it, and it wasn't necessary)
Level I needn't have taken a pillow since I can't sleep in class.
Pre-intermediate (A2) (I took it, but it wasn't necessary)
When the students have finished, divide them into pairs or small
Time groups and have the students discuss whether they needed to
take the items or not.
35 minutes
When everyone has finished, have a class feedback session to
discuss the students' answers.
