Assessment Task 1: Questions
Student Assessment Instructions
 This is a written assessment. All questions must be answered for this assessment.
 This written assessment will need to be completed again if it is incomplete or without satisfactory
performance, after further training support. This may be to focus on question areas not achieved in
the prior attempt at the assessment.
 The written assessment may be re-attempted on two occasions (maximum of three attempts).
 This is an open book assessment.
 Respond to all questions in the spaces provided.
 You must answer all questions correctly for this assessment to be completed satisfactorily. Ask your
assessor to clarify any aspect you are unsure about in this assessment task.

Required Resources
 You will need to have access to relevant legislation, standards and codes, industry practices.

Evidence
 You must submit the completed assessment cover sheet and your answers to your assessor, either by
handing in written responses or by online submission within the allocated time.
 Ensure you keep a copy of your submitted work. Assessments submitted without a completed cover
sheet will not be accepted.

When and where will this assessment take place?


 Your assessor will provide you with the due date, which can be recorded in the assessment plan.
 Your assessor may also specify the length of time allowed and the expected word count, if applicable.

What if the assessment is not suitable?


 If you are unable to provide sufficient evidence with the written assessment method, your assessor
may be able to provide you with an alternative method. Discuss this with your assessor.

What happens if your answers are not satisfactory?


 If any of the assessment responses are not satisfactory, your assessor will provide you with feedback.
You may need to resubmit some or all the questions. Your assessor will explain the details for your
reassessment.
 In most cases, you will be allowed a maximum of three attempts.
 If you are not satisfied with your assessment result, you have the right to lodge an appeal. Ask your
assessor or contact the Course Coordinator for more information.

Question 1 Identify at least 3 conditions to consider during representation in consultation with
individuals and key groups.
Answer Confidentiality of the individuals – To ensure fair hearing during representation it is
crucial to ensure that the information being shared does not spread to unauthorized
parties.
Delegation and distribution of tasks - It is important that all parties to an issue feel
well represented by having a chance to express their views.
A good understanding of the community structures – Having an understanding of the
systems and structures is very ideal in ensuring the consultation is successful.

Question 2 Underpinning the work in the community and health services sector is the principle of
human rights. Explain what this means, and give at least 4 examples of human rights
Answer Human rights are fundamental in community and health work as it is important to
acknowledge all the diverse ways humans are in terms or religion, culture, race,
gender and other preferences.

Answer Patient advocacy whereby a patient speaks up on their healthcare needs like
improved access and health promotion.

Question 4 Give an example of a type of advocacy that may be requested by an individual person,
such as a parent.
Answer Educational Advocacy – This a type of advocacy whereby a parent can request certain
resources that are deemed to be helpful to their student. This can be extra lessons or
access to some facilities.

Answer Climate change advocacy whereby a group of people can come together to advocate
for changes in the environment that will promote better climate for all.
Educational advocacy whereby parents can come together to discuss what teachers

Question 6 Explain raising awareness as a function of advocacy. Why is it important?

Answer Raising awareness is a process of advocacy that involves educating the masses about
an issue in order to get the support of the public. It works by bringing to the attention
a certain issue under discussion and providing possible solutions to the problem.

Question 7 Explain the role of advocacy in acting on behalf of a person.


Answer While acting on behalf of a person advocacy assists a person to be able to get fair
representation and hearing increasing the chances of success. While representing
someone we ensure that they are well aware of all the necessary information
required to assist them. It also involves representing them in the negations and
meetings that are done. The goal of representation is to ensure a fair hearing for the
person.

Question 8 Give two examples of types of written documents may be required as a function of
advocacy.
Answer Letter of Advocacy – A written letter by the relevant authority addressing specific
concerns that require to be handled.
A chart or diagram display of statistics or data that shows comparisons of the matters
being advocated for and the set goals if achieved.
Petition signatures- Signature collection to show the number of people in support of
the matter being advocated for.

Question 9 Explain how representation and advocacy are different from decision-making made on
behalf of a person or a service provider.
Answer Representation and advocacy involve listening to the point of view of a certain party
and offering to assist them in achieving their goals/wishes.
Decision-making on the other hand is making a choice on behalf of one regardless of
their point of view.

Question 10 Explain why it is important to understand the processes of a particular industry and/or
government before representation begins.
Answer Understanding the processes of a certain industry assists in the advocacy process by
having the thoughts well aligned with the systems in place. In the long run it becomes
possible to offer better representation that does not conflict with the systems in
place.

health industries is very crucial as it helps in designing the plans of actions that can

Question 12 How does an understanding of the processes and structures relevant to an
organisation’s goals and objectives assist in representation?
Answer A good understanding of an organisation’s goals and objectives can assist one in
having a better representation in their advocacy. The policies and objectives are what
drives the organisation and is therefore crucial that they are well aligned to the
actions that are required to be done by the people being represented.

Question 13 How does an understanding of the processes, structures and boundaries relevant to
your work role assist in representation?
Answer Understanding processes, structures and boundaries assists the representation by
enabling the advocacy process to be more precise to the goal and well organized. It is
important to acknowledge the boundaries that are set and work within the
framework in order to get better results.

Answer Online social media platforms such as WhatsApp, twitter, Facebook etc. are very
effective in advocating a certain agenda.

Answer Individual advocacy advocates for the rights and needs of a single person to help

alliances?
Answer Strategic alliances are key for advocacy efforts since it helps with creating awareness
and can make the set priorities easy to achieve through ways like funding and
creating awareness and pushing for achievement of objectives.

representation and advocacy?
Answer Reporting demonstrates the roles and processes included for planning the action,
involve stakeholders, address the issue and future representation. Accountability can

Answer Guardianship appears when a judge selects an individual or organisation to look after
the care of a child or an adult with any disability or mental health issues. This
Guardianship becomes responsible for the person's welfare until they reached 18, or
if anything happened into case of adults.
