Introduction
This document describes the implemented changes in the released version of
UNICORN™ start.
Compatibility
Release 1.3
Features
• A new license file is required to use the UNICORN start 1.3 application. The license file
of the previous version of UNICORN start will not work with UNICORN start 1.3.
Users upgrading to UNICORN start 1.3 must contact their regional customer support
team referring to product number: 29704233 (Upgrade to UNICORN start 1.3 ESD +
eLicense) along with the previous version license activation ID. Please refer to the
UNICORN start homepage for more details: https://www.cytivalifesciences.com/shop/

• Corrected the installation and system connection issues related to Language &
Regional settings. During the installation, follow the Language and regional settings
instructions to avoid installation and system connection-related issues.
• Corrected UNICORN start disconnecting from the instrument during long method
runs.
• UNICORN start 1.3 software has been upgraded with SQL Server 2019.
• During UNICORN start 1.3 installation, the link to configure the eLicense has been
updated.
• Corrected the pump wash defect under System Control → Method Run → Pre defined
→ System preparation → Pump Wash. Pump wash A and B options are now available.
• Updated the system performance test result file location path in Method Notes.
• Implemented the console app (Update Stored Procedure.exe) to make the earlier
UNICORN start databases compatible with the rebranded application.
• Rebranding of UNICORN start Namespaces, Headers and Assembly information to
Cytiva, from GE Healthcare.
• UNICORN start 1.3 has been updated to accommodate rebranding changes for
Vendor ID (VID).
Known limitations
• WINUSB for GE Healthcare remains in the Control Panel, it is a redundant driver, it will
not affect UNICORN start 1.3. User requires to remove it manually.
• All known limitations in UNICORN start 1.2 also remain for UNICORN start 1.3.
Release 1.2
Features
• Mismatch between the valve position and the process picture.
• Flow-rate could not be set with a decimal point.
• When more than one sample application phase was added in a protocol, the sample
application flow-rate was set to default.
• Issue with the concentration at accepting value being out of range.
• In the system error report, the IC version was V4.7 while the installation report gave it
as V4.6.
• Fractionation tube number mismatch in volume and time axis.
• Issues with display resolution in both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
• Issues with button visibility in the software help window in Windows 10.
Known limitations
• When executing the feed flow instruction manually, the initial feed flow instruction is
not logged in the run log.
• Save anyway is not automatically disabled for imported methods that contains errors.
When opening methods created using UNICORN start 1.0 or 1.1, never save a method
that contains instructions that are not supported by the system. The method will
become corrupt and cannot be recovered.
• The system will be on hold before and after the sample application phase using
sample loop.
• The USB cable needs to be reconnected to the PC after enabling or disabling the Frac
option from the ÄKTA start instrument touchscreen.
• The user interface does not fit the screen size and text is misaligned in boxes.
• When connecting a USB cable to a PC for the first time, the user has to unplug and
then plug-in the cable to establish the connection. The issue has been observed in
Windows 7 and Windows 10.
• Methods created using UNICORN start 1.0 or 1.1, containing multiple sample
application phases with different flow rates, should not be imported into UNICORN
start 1.2. They might not provide correct output. The issue is fixed in UNICORN start
1.2. Users should create new methods for such purposes.
Release 1.1
Features
UNICORN start 1.1 corrects the defect that prevented the correct display of
fractionation marks in a UNICORN result file. The defect occurred if the run was executed
from an UNICORN start instrument and the result file was subsequently imported to a
computer using a USB memory stick.
Prior to correction, the fractionation marks and run logs were not adjusted correctly to
the injection mark, if the imported result file had the following features:
• Injection marks displayed
• Fractionation marks displayed
• Setting Adjust retention zero to injection number enabled (default setting)
After the correction, the fractionation marks and run logs are displayed correctly in the
imported result file.
