Assignment 4 – Gas-cut mud impact

Calculate the expected reduction in bottomhole pressure and pit gain for the data as given below:
Hole size=9.625 in. (cubic ft /12)
Hole depth=10,000 ft
Vertical hole depth with the gas-cut mud – 9038 ft
Drilling rate=60 ft/hr (ft/min)
Original mud density=10 lb/gal
Mud flow rate=350 gal/min
Formation pore pressure gradient=0.47 psi/ft
Porosity=30%
Water saturation=25%
Gas saturation=75%
Gas specific gravity=0.6 (air specific gravity is 1.0)
Surface temperature=540◦R
Temperature gradient=0.01◦F/ft
Solution:
1) Gas volumetric rate entering the annulus
OOIP (original oil in-place) = V*Gas Saturation*Porosity =
(πd^2)/4*H(ft/min)*S*Porosity = (3.14*(9.625/12)^2)/4 * 60 ft/hour * (1/60 ft/min) * 0.75
* 0.3 = 0.11 ft3/min (to convert to gal/min we need multiply * 7.48)
0.11*7.48 = 0.85 gal/min

2) Gas volumetric flowrate at surface (at constant temperature)

P1V1=P2V2
P2 (BHP) = 0.47*10000 = 4700
V1 = P2V2/P1 = (4700 * 0.85)/14.7 = 271.76 gal/min

3) Gas concentration as surface - as

as = V(surface) / V(in the well = gas flow rate + mud flow rate) = 271.76 / (271.76 + 350)
= 0.43

4) Mud weight as surface (assume z=1.0)

γs = ((14.7 * 29)/(1 * 8.31 * 540) + 10 (1 – 0.437) = 5.72 lb/gal

5) Hydrostatic pressure of gas-cut mud

Ph = 14.7 + ((5.72 * 9038 * 0.052)/(1 – 0.43)) – ((14.7 * 0.43) / (1 – 0.43)) * ln(Ph/14.7)

= 4719 psia
6) Hydrostatic head at the bottom of the hole
0.052 * 10 * (10000 – 9038) + 4719 = 5219.24 psia

7) Hydrostatic pressure of the original mud

10 * 0.052 * 10000 + 14.7 = 5214.7 psia

8) Conclusion
Hydrostatic pressure of the gas-cut mud is sufficient to prevent any formation fluid kick
into the hole.
We have a influx, because our hydrostatic pressure is changes. Do we need using killing
method or not? We just continue the drilling with the same original mud and it will be
removed so it means you don’t need to use. If hydrostatic pressure will be less than the
formation pressure it means we need to use one of this methods.
