What happened in the
Cavite Mutiny?

Cavite Mutiny,(January 20,1872), brief uprising of
200 Filipino troops and workers at Cavite arsenal,
which became the excuse for Spanish repression
of the embryonic Philippine nationalist movement.
Ironically, the harsh reaction of the Spanish
authorities served ultimately to promote the
nationalist cause.

Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and
Jacinto Zamora The Spanish
prosecutors bribed a witness to
testify against the three priests
who were charged with sedition
and treason, which led to their
death by garrote. Their execution
left a profound effect on many
Filipinos, including Dr. Jose Rizal,
the national hero, who dedicated
his novel El Filibusterismo to their
memory.

Spanish Accounts of The
Cavite Mutiny

The documentation of Spanish historian Jose
Montero y Vidal centered on how the event was an
attempt in overthrowing the Spanish government in
the Philippines. Although regarded as a historian, his
account of the mutiny was criticized as woefully
biased and rabid for scholar. Another account from
the official report written by then Governor General
Rafael Izquierdo implicated. The native clergy, who
were then, active in the in the movement toward
secularization of parishes.

Events of 1872

Two other primary accounts exist that
seem to counter the acccounts of
Izquierdo and Montero. First, the
account of Dr. Trinidad Hermengildo
Pardo de Tavera, a Filipino scholar and
researcher, who wrote a Filipino
version of the bloody incident in Cavite.
