Figurative language - uses "figures of speech" - a way of saying something other than the literal meaning of the words.

A. Ten Figurative Language 1.) Simile- A figure of speech in which a comparison is expressed by the specific use of a word or phrase such as: like, as, than, seems or Frost's favorite "as if," Examples: Mending Wall: like an old-stone savage armed Stars: like some snow-white/ Minerva's snow-white marble eyes Going for Water: We ran as if to meet the moon ---- we paused / like gnomes 2.)Metaphor- A figure of speech in which a comparison is made between two things essentially unalike. Examples: The Silken Tent. A woman is admired for her strength and beauty, like a silken tent. Note the strength of the silk and cedar. Putting in the Seed. The planting of seed in the garden, in springtime is like making love. Devotion. The passive but ever-changing shore and the persistent energetic ocean are like a devoted couple. 3.) Personification- A type of metaphor in which distinct human qualities, e.g., honesty, emotion, volition, etc., are attributed to an animal, object or idea. Examples: My November Guest: the guest is Sorrow, personified as a woman dearly loved who walks with him. Mowing: the scythe whispers Range-Finding: the spider sullenly withdraws 4.)Apostrophe- A figure of speech in which someone absent or dead OR something nonhuman is addressed as if it were alive and present. Examples: Take Something Like a Star: the poem begins, "O Star," He addresses the star throughout the poem. Tree at my Window: He addresses the tree throughout: "Tree at my window, window tree." Mending Wall: speaking to the stones that make up the barrier, he says, "Stay where you are until our backs are turned!" 5.)Synecdoche- A figure of speech which mentions a part of something to suggest the whole. Examples: Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening: The little journey in the poem represents life's journey. The Gift Outright: The gift represents the history of the United States. I Will Sing You One-O: Two clock towers striking One o'clock represent extensions of earthly and heavenly time. 6.)Metonymy- A figure of speech that uses a concept closely related to the thing actually meant. The substitution makes the analogy more vivid and meaningful. Examples:

Out, Out: the injured boy holds up his hand "as if to keep / the life from spilling." The literal meaning is to keep the blood from spilling. Frost's line tells us that the hand is bleeding and the boy's life is in danger. 7.)Allegory or Parable- A poem in the form of a narrative or story that has a second meaning beneath the surface one. Examples: After Apple-Picking: the apple harvest suggests accomplishment The Grindstone: the grinding of the blade suggests the idea of judging and recognizing limits The Lockless Door: a story of self escape 8.)Paradox- A statement or situation containing apparently contradictory or incompatible elements, but on closer inspection may be true. Examples: Nothing Gold Can Stay: green is gold The Gift Outright: "And forthwith found salvation in surrender." Ghost House: I dwell in a house that vanished. 9.)Hyperbole- A bold, deliberate overstatement not intended to be taken literally, it is used as a means of emphasizing the truth of a statement. Example: A Star in a Stoneboat: A meteorite is found in a field and supposed to be a star which has fallen to earth Etherealizing: The idea of reducing ourselves simply to a brain. After Apple-Picking: Ten thousand thousand fruit to touch. 10.) Understatement- The presentation of a thing with underemphasis in order to achieve a greater effect. Frost uses this device extensively, often as a means of irony. Examples: Fire and Ice: Ice, which for destruction is great, "will suffice." Mowing: "Anything more than the truth would have seemed to weak" This is almost Frost's definition of understatement Hyla Brook: the last line "We love the things we love for what they are." Idiomatic Expressions- is a phrase or sentence, whose meaning is completely different from the literal meaning of the words comprising the idiom or idiomatic expression. B. Idiomatic Expressions 1.) Above and beyond more than what is normally required. The off-duty policeman chased and caught the bag snatcher; his action was above and beyond what was expected of him since he was not on duty at that time. 2.)Beyond the call of duty in addition to what is required in the normal course of performing ones job. The fireman went back to the burning house to rescue the cat; he acted beyond his call of duty. 3.)Above suspicion having a reputation for honesty that no one would suspect you of wrongdoing. The teacher was elected club treasurer because she is known to be completely above suspicion. 4.)Ace in a hole something or someone held in reserve to turn things

around later. The new recruit is the teams ace in the hole to improve their standing in the sports competition this year. 5.)Acid test a test whose result is considered to be conclusive or beyond doubt. The DNA result will be the acid test that will determine if the authorities caught the real culprit in the crime. 6.)Across the board Shared equally by everyone. The company management decided to give salary increases to the employees across the board. 7.)Bad-mouth someone to say unpleasant or bad things about someone. Leo and Tess are bad-mouthing each other since their relationship broke up. 8.)Bark up the wrong tree to ask or argue with the wrong person. Nothing will come out of your complain because youre barking up the wrong tree. 9.)Cast the first stone - to be the first one to criticize or accuse. The crowd burst into sudden uproar when the thief was caught that it was hard to tell who cast the first stone. 10.)Catch someone red-handed to catch someone in the act of doing something wrong that one cannot deny doing it. The barangay tanod caught the pick-pocket red-handed. 11.)Catch someones eye to have eye contact with someone or to attract someones attention. The lady in red dress caught someones eye at the party. 12.)Come what may no matter what may happen, or what the consequence may be. Im not joining your game, come what may. 13.)Come with the territory to be expected to happen under the circumstances. The heckling by some people in the audience comes with the territory when you are a politician. 14.)Commit something to memory to memorize something. I didnt have a pen and paper at that time so I have to commit to my memory her phone number. 15.)Give someone the benefit of the doubt to make a favorable judgment or impression to an individual when the evidence or proof is unclear as to being in favor or against that individual. I know him as an honest person so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. 16.)Have the time of his/her life to have a very good time or most exciting moment in ones life. The bride was having the time of her life during the wedding reception.

17.)Look to one's laurels - to be on guard against rivals. You need to look at one's laurels to stay ahead of the competition. 18.)Luck out to get lucky; be fortunate. The new hire lucked out because he was not among those employees who get laid off. 19.)Over the long haul over a long period of time. Your training will be hard but it will improve your stamina over the long haul. 20.)Over the short haul over a short period of time. The business plan looks unprofitable but only in the short haul. 21.)Pad the bill to include miscellaneous unnecessary items to increase the amount of a bill or invoice. The employee got into trouble for padding the bill when he submitted his travel expenses. 22.)Pain in the neck bothersome, annoying. His new roommate is a pain in the neck. 23.)Rest on one's laurels - to stop striving for further success or accolade. Do not rest on your laurels if you want to be successful in life. 24.)Roll the sleeves up To start getting some work done. Lets roll our sleeves up before our manager walks in. 25.)Sail under false color to pretend to be different to mislead somebody. I dont trust the candidate because I have a feeling he is sailing under false color.
