Topic: Learning targets and Assessment Method Match Date: Dec. 9, 2022

Objectives:
At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:

A. define Learning target and Assessment method

B. appreciate the Learning target and Assessment method; and
C. make a Venn Diagram between Learning target and Assessment method

I. Introduction

One way you will know that your targets are clear and usable is if you can
determine what kind of learning is being called for. The accuracy of the
assessments you develop will depend in part on your ability to classify
learning targets in any written curriculum in a way that helps ensure a
dependable assessment.

II. Content

★ Learning target ★
 Learning targets are short term goals or statements.
 Your learning targets should clearly state what you expect students
to know and be able to do at the end of the lesson.
★ Assessment Method ★
 It is way of assessing something or someone.
 Direct methods are when students demonstrate that they have
achieved a learning outcomes or objective.
 Indirect methods are when students (or others) report perceptions
of how well student have achieved an objective or outcome

★ Types of learning target ★

 Knowledge Targets
- Knowledge targets represent the factual information,
procedural knowledge, and conceptual understandings that
underpin each discipline or subject matter.
 Reasoning
- Reasoning targets specify thought processes students are
to learn to apply effectively (do well) within a range of
subjects; e.g., solve problems, make inferences, draw
conclusions, form, and defend judgment.

 Skill
- Skill targets are those learning targets where a real-time
demonstration or physical performance is the heart of
learning.
- Subjects such as physical education, fine arts, performing
arts, and world languages, have skill development as the
core of their discipline.

 Product
- Product examples include " creates tables, graphs, scatter
plots, and box plots to display data effectively.

 Disposition
- Disposition targets reflect attitudes and feelings.
- Disposition targets represent important affective goals we
hold for students as byproducts of their educational
experience and not assessed for the purpose of grading.

★ Type of Assessment method ★

 Selected Response (SR)
- Student select correct and best response from a list
provided
 Extended written response (EWR)
- Requires student to construct written answer in response to
a question or task
 Performance Assessment
- Based on observation or judgement
 Personal Communication
- Finding out what students learn through interacting with
them.
III. Synthesis

The accuracy of any classroom assessment turns on selecting the

appropriate assessment method that matches the achievement target to
be assessed. To begin thinking about the match between kind of learning
target and assessment method, “Target–method Match.” The acceptable
matches between methods and kind of learning target result in accurate
information gathered as efficiently as possible. The mismatches occur
when the assessment method is not capable of yielding accurate
information about the learning target.

V. Reflection

Taking a closer look at the various types of learning targets, this lesson
describes how to match them to appropriate assessment methods. A proper and
right match keeps you going in the right direction.
