LOCATION
As far as we researched we didn’t get any thing about the concept or them of the design. But the
architectural ambition of the project is to create a building that respects the neighboring listed
buildings and surrounding conservation area whilst also adding a confident piece of contemporary
design to Bristol.
SITE DEVELOPMENT
As we mentioned before, the design objective was to respect the neighboring buildings while it
is confident contemporary design. To achieve this, the building is arranged in two parallel
wings, with the east-facing element housing the office accommodation and responding to the
proportion and massing of the adjacent listed buildings. Distinctly different in form, the west-
facing wing is designed as an undulating aluminium wall, signifying the cutting-edge laboratory
space housed in that part of the building. The two elements of the building are linked by a full
height atrium space, which forms the social heart of the building.
The east wing of the Life Sciences Building houses non-laboratory spaces, such as offices and
seminar rooms. These areas require less floor-to-floor space than the laboratory areas so the
eastern elevation facing St Michael’s Hill can be reduced in height, responding to the scale of
the neighbouring conservation area. The east façade of the building is divided into vertical
bays, with the finish alternating between Bath stone and render to reflect the domestic
architecture of the area. The massing of this block is stepped in order to conceal the profile of
the building when viewed from the city below. The west-facing wing is wrapped in a wall of
natural anodized aluminium which acts as a counterpoint to the more traditional east-facing
façade. The shape of the façade is determined by the design of the laboratories inside,
covering the ducts that drop from roof-level plant enclosures down the West façade to supply
air to each laboratory. One of the key drivers for the project is to increase the opportunities for

interaction between researchers, staff, students and visitors. The generous atrium spaces
addressed this by creating a social hub for the building with meeting and circulation spaces.
The atrium also contains display cabinets to showcase Bristol University’s extensive collection
of specimens and artefacts.
As we can see there is functional flow among the spaces with certain function.
Spaces were functional with no space wastage. This functionality leds the building to sensory

In the south, recessed windows are applied for ventilation and lighting. And there is also

TECHNOLOGY
As our research the university didn’t use a technology that impacts the design or the building.
For instance we haven’t seen any electrical vertical circulation systems like elevators and
escalators. This is hard to climb out the 20 risers single flight stairs for the disabled person. And
this is the weak side of the design.
One of the good side of the buildings is, it has more than sufficient amount of natural light
entering in the north south east and the top of the building. Even the stairs are light
permeable. And this creates good ventilation inside the building. There are also greeneries that
gives refreshing character in the interior.
BUILDING DETAILS
The interior of the building has 2 dominant colors which are white and green. This colors gave
the building brighter interior in addition to the natural lights.
As we mentioned earlier the building has lack of technological appliances that eases circulation.
In our point of view at least escalators should be implemented in order to circulate easily.
CONCLUSION
Generally, Bristol life science university is a building that has architecturally pleasing form with
best spaces and functional flow. But, as a genuine comment technology should be added inside
it to achieve ease of circulation. The rest is good. It will give us lots of lessons on our project.
