Date: 10/22/2023

My thoughts and notes about what I have been learning in my coursework today:

Today I have started and finished unit 9 lesson 1. Some new concepts I have learned today is many
action words such as throwing, jumping and climbing in Mandarin, as well as I have also learned many
different scenarios involving the words easy and difficult which I am very confident now to use these
words in a sentence in Mandarin. Here are some other words I have learned:

Fence: 栅栏 (Zhà lán)

Garden: 花园 (Huā yuán)

Swimming pool: 游泳池 (Yóu yǒng chí)

Broken: 破碎 (Pò suì)

Throwing: 投掷 (Tóu zhí)

Jumping: 跳跃 (Tiào yuè)

Climbing: 攀登 (Pān dēng)

Water surface: 水面 (Shuǐ miàn)

Bed: 床 (Chuáng)

Cat: 猫 (Māo)

Televison: 电视 (Diàn shì)

Clock: 钟 (Zhōng)

Suitcase: 手提箱 (Shǒu tí xiāng)

Overall, today I have learned a lot of new words and vocabulary as well as 2 verbs (to fix, to repair) and 2
colors in Mandarin (Brown and Gray). Tomorrow, I will work on completing lesson 2 unit 9.

My thoughts and notes about what I have been learning in my coursework today:

Today I have finished unit 9 lesson 2. I have learned many chores and responsibilities today such as
Sweeping the floor, taking the garbage out, washing the dishes, vacuuming the carpet and more. I have
also learned the names of many different appliances around the kitchen in mandarin such as Stove,
refrigerator, and dishwasher. I have also learned some new adjectives today (clean, messy, empty and
fill) which I am very confident to use in mandarin now because of this lesson. Anyway, here are some
other words I have learned today:

Stove: 火炉 (Huǒ lú)

Refrigerator: 冰箱 (Bīng xiāng)

Dishwasher: 洗碗机 (Xǐ wǎn jī)

Glass cup: 玻璃杯 (Bō lí bēi)

Countertop: 台面 (Tái miàn)

Carpet: 地毯 (Dì tǎn)

Ceiling: 天花板 (Tiān huā bǎn)

Couch: 长椅 (Cháng yǐ)

Bathtub: 浴缸 (Yù gāng)

Sink: 下沉 (Xià chén)

Airplane: 飞机 (Fēi jī)

Overall, today was a very productive day because I got lesson 2 fully completed. Tomorrow, I will start
doing lesson 3.

My thoughts and notes about what I have been learning in my coursework today:

Today, I have completed the core lesson, pronunciation, reading and grammar component of lesson 3
unit 9. I have learned many words and situations in mandarin that are about fitness (strong and
exercise). I have also learned the names of many new sports in mandarin (Soccer, tennis and golf) as
well as new words of instruments (Violin and piano). I have also learned many new verbs today involving
these situations (To learn, to listen, to take, to drink, to wear and to practice). Here are some new words
I have learned today:

Strong: 强 (Qiáng)

Exercise: 锻炼 (Duàn liàn)

Soccer: 足球 (Zú qiú)

Tennis: 网球 (Wǎng qiú)

Golf: 高尔夫球 (Gāo ěr fū qiú)

Violin: 小提琴 (Xiǎo tí qín)

Piano: 钢琴 (Gāng qín)

Fast: 快速 (Kuài sù)

Cold: 寒冷 (Hán lěng)

Chocolate: 巧克力 (Qiǎo kè lì)

Dress: 裙子 (Qún zi)

Overall, today I have learned many new words and verbs in mandarin. My goal for the upcoming weeks
is to finish unit 9 before November as well as to improve more on my reading and writing skills in this
course.

Journal Entry #17

Date: 10/30/2023

My thoughts and notes about what I have been learning in my coursework today:

Today, I finished the other half of lesson 3 unit 9 after being gone for 2 days due to a mini vacation.
Today I have learned some new verbs that I now know how to say and use in Mandarin (To catch, to
repair, to work, to climb and to practice). I have also learned many words affiliated with technology in
mandarin (Radio, computer, cameras and clock). I have also learned 3 different adverbs in Mandarin
today (Never, sometimes and always) which now I feel comfortable using in a sentence. Anyways, here
are some more words I have learned today:

Orange: 橙子 (Chéng zi)

Toy: 玩具 (Wán jù)

Radio: 收音机 (Shōu yīn jī)

Computer: 电脑 (Diàn nǎo)

Camera: 相机 (Xiàng jī)

Clock: 钟 (Zhōng)

Bed sheets: 床单 (Chuáng dān)

Carpet: 地毯 (Dì tǎn)

Overall, today I have so far finished lesson 3 but I am not finished. I will also try to complete about half
of lesson 4 unit 9 later today.

Date: 10/30/2023

My thoughts and notes about what I have been learning in my coursework today:

Today, I have also completed about half of lesson 4 unit 9. I have completed the core lesson,
pronunciation, speaking, review, reading, listening and grammar component of this lesson. Some new
words I have learned today is that I have learned many names of different body parts such as eyes, ears,
nose, mouth, wrist and knee. I have also learned many new verbs in Mandarin such as to wash, to
dance, to brush, to fly, to sit, to clean and to sweep. I have also learned the difference between the body
temperature and temperature which the body temperature refers to the temperature inside your body
while the temperature in general refers to the temperature usually outside or the temperature of an
object. Anyways, here are some new words I have learned today in Mandarin:

Eyes: 眼睛 (Yǎn jīng)

Ears: 耳朵 (Ěr duǒ)

Nose: 鼻子 (Bí zi)

Mouth: 嘴 (Zuǐ)

Wrist: 手腕 (Shǒu wàn)

Knee: 膝盖 (Xī gài)

Body temperature: 体温 (Tǐ wēn)

Injured: 受伤 (Shòu shāng)

Bandage: 绷带 (Bēng dài)

Sick: 生病 (Shēng bìng)

Medicine: 药品 (Yào pǐn)

Sweater: 毛衣 (Máo yī)

Overall, this lesson had many words that are affiliated with health and “being sick or injured”.
Tomorrow I will work on finishing the last half of this lesson as well as completing this unit all together.

My thoughts and notes about what I have been learning in my coursework today:

Today I have finished unit 9 and I am officially halfway through Rosetta Stone. Today was mainly review
from previous lessons but I learned many new words such as more body parts (Arm, head and belly) in
mandarin. I have also learned some new adjectives today (Wet and expensive) as well as I have also
learned how to use should and shouldn't in a sentence in Mandarin. Anyways, here are some new words
I have learned today.

Game: 游戏 (Yóu xì)

Arm: 手臂 (Shǒu bì)

Head: 头 (Tóu)

Belly: 腹部 (Fù bù)

Train: 火车 (Huǒ chē)

Wet: 湿 (Shī)

Expensive: 昂贵 (Áng guì)

Inside: 里面 (Lǐ miàn)

Outside: 外面 (Wài miàn)

Overall, I have learned many new vocabulary and words today as well as finishing unit 9 which I am very
proud of. I will try to finish unit 10 and unit 11 in November.
