1. How do agricultural cooperatives impact women's empowerment in Uganda?

In the context of the Popular Knowledge Women’s Initiative (P’KWI) Farmer to Farmer Cooperative
Society, it was found that P’KWI members were impacted in the following ways: impact on economic
wellbeing, agronomic knowledge and practice, social networks, and livelihood diversification. It was
found that being a member of P’KWI significantly reduced the household food and need insecurity
among women and their households. What this entails is that the economic wellbeing of not only these
women, but also their families had been enhanced by the cooperative. The results of the study also
showed that subjective household wellbeing had been increased, which implies that the women who
had joined the cooperative felt that their households were in better condition due to the cooperative.
Not only has P’KWI helped them financially and economically, but also agronomically as it has helped
these women with their knowledge and production in agriculture.

All in all, being a member of the P’KWI has significantly empowered women and improved the quality of
life for them. This is a prime example of how cooperatives positively impact the lives of its members.

2. What are the functions of Management in a cooperative?

These are the activities that managers and directors must perform in a particular role. These roles may
appear to be similar, but directors and managers have different levels of responsibility and authority
which is why they perform different activities for the same function, mangers and directors could be
working together towards the same goal, but their tasks are different. It could be described in a way that
directors handle activities in a large scale while managers handle the interpersonal activities.

3. What are the functions of managers and directors in a cooperative?

Firstly, the function of directors could be defined as: planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and
controlling (PODCC). Next, the function of managers could be defined as: planning, organizing,
motivating, and controlling (POMC).

Looking into the difference of the planning function between directors and managers, it could be said
that the board of directors usually plan for a broad scope in the long term, and they also think of the
strategies to use to achieve these goals that they set, while managers assist directors in the planning
stage by also planning the day-to-day objectives while creating projections for the year.

This difference emphasizes that directors and managers have different responsibilities, directors are
more likely to work on the vision of the larger picture while managers are in charge of implementing the
necessary steps to get to the envisioned goal.
