Q: Watch the TV talk show (20-30 min) and analyse the conversations in light of
Grecian maxims of cooperation, highlighting the ones not followed by the
presenters and/or the guests.
There are four maxims of cooperation. Maxim Of manner, maxim of
quantity, maxim of quality and maxim of relevance.
Maxim of manner is the manner that how the person is speaking. Maxim of
quality deals that what the person is speaking is truth or not. Maxim of quantity
deals with the persons tone, highness and lowness of voice and is the person
talking excessive or limited. Maxim of relevance deals is the person who is
speaking is relevant to the topic or not.
The talk show which I have been selected is The Steve TV show. The conversation
is between Steve Harvey and 9 year’s old CEO who runs thriving haircare
businesses. In this talk show the presenters and guests demonstrated cooperation
by being polite and respectful. They took turns speaking, listened to each other,
and stayed on topic. However, there were a few instances where they didn’t fully
follow the Grecian maxims. For example, there were times when they didn’t
provide enough information or went off-topic. Despite these minor deviations,
overall, the conversations were enjoyable and informative.
1. Maxim of Quality: The presenters and guests in the video aimed to provide
truthful and accurate information. They shared their opinions, insights, and
knowledge related to the topic at hand.
For example, when Steve Harvey said to Khyln “So what were you thinking
when you came down that escalator?” and Khyln replied “To pop off and
show my personality and dance. I was giving them what they're looking
for.”
2. Maxim of Quantity: They generally provided an appropriate amount of
information, neither too little nor too much. They gave enough details to
keep the conversation engaging and informative without overwhelming the
listeners. when discussing a topic, they elaborated on their ideas and gave
examples to enhance understanding.

For example, when Steve Harvey said his mom “So mom has Khyln always
been the life of a party?” and his mom replied “Always when She goes to
birthday parties, when she’s anywhere she’s at we go to restaurants I mean
She walks in flips her hair and people like oh my God, you get it girl”.

3. Maxim of Relevance: The participants stayed on topic and discussed

relevant points related to the subject of the video. They avoided going off
on unrelated tangents and focused on the main theme.
For example, when Steve Harvey said to Khyln “Tell me about the company
of yours.” Khyln replied “It’s called Kylan’s growth refinement LLC. The
Instagram is called Khyln growth refinement and I sell natural hair products
like these right here.”

4. Maxim of Manner: They followed the rules of conversation etiquette by

speaking clearly, using appropriate language, and avoiding ambiguity. They
also took turns speaking, listened actively, and respected each other’s
opinions. For example, they asked questions politely and listened actively
to each other’s responses.
For example, when Steve Harvey said “So where did you get this from?”
and Khyln replied “I don’t know, it’s my personality like everywhere. I have
to go I have to put on heels address and I have to put on the plus and then
we can go they have to wait on me to get ready.”
While they mostly adhered to these maxims, there were a few instances where
they deviated slightly. For example, they may have gone off-topic briefly or not
provided enough information on certain points. However, these deviations didn’t
significantly impact the overall flow and enjoyment of the conversation.
