Population Structure and DTM
Lesson Objectives
•Identify what is meant by dependent population
•Create a population pyramid for each stage of the Demographic Transition
Model
•Evaluate the role of a range of factors on the changes in a country’s population
What is the difference?
Key Terms

• DEPENDENT POPULATION: people who depend on other people to look

after them and support them, they do not work or earn money (unemployed)

• ECONOMICALLY ACTIVE: people who are earning a living and working

(employed)

• POPULATION STRUCTURE: the proportion of males and females within

selected age groups, usually shown as a population pyramid
Why is it a problem to have a lot of dependents?

• The number of people dependent on the working can be a huge

problem for some countries, as they will have to find ways to
support the dependent population

• The number of people dependent on others can be calculated

to give a dependency ratio

• In the UK this value is 60.68, which means for every 100 people
of working age in the UK 61 people will be dependent on them
